Due Wed April 17
A Personal Style
For this final Project, you will produce a short video from beginning to end on your own. Your task is to combine the many roles you learned in previous projects into one short project of 60 seconds. You may want to get footage for a 3-5 minute video then get to work on fine editing until you have your “short”. Consider which skills a) you already know and can depend on, and b) which skills you want to practice/learn: audio, visual impact, text titles, storytelling. You may want to choose some of each to work with.
This writing exercise is geared to helping you plan and develop your personal vision. Using text, drawings, images, outlines, photos, samples, storyboards or whatever tools help you define your project, draft a version of your video project. You can add video inspirations (add the URL), or photos that create the “look” you want. You can write a rough script, or sketch out a simple storyboard, or make a shot list. You may even try a rough video version if that’s helpful–a very rough cut.
The goal of this “writing” is to get your ideas out of your head and into a format you can share with others to get some initial feedback and suggestions. The goal is to PLAY with the skills you’ve learned and also learn some new ones.
Some Models
In an age of Youtube, Social Media, and “solution journalism”, there are many example of simple, moving and short videos. The key is usually to pick both a topic that you care about and a context that you can work with given your limited time frame. Remember to save at least a full week just for editing AFTER you’ve made the “rough cut”.
Some Questions
You do not need to answer any of these in the assignment, but you may want to consider any that inspire you.
- What are your favorite Youtube videos? Why? What do you like about them? How can you make something similar?
- What are your favorite stories in any medium? What do they appeal to you? How can you make something similar?
- What do you love? What would you protect at great cost to you? Can your work with some aspect of this?
- What makes you happy? When you have free time how do you like to spend it (after you get a deserved rest)?
- When you play, what do you do? with whom? How does it nourish you? What other kinds of play would nourish you?
