Design by Nature–applied permaculture in a logo & principle
While permaculture principles are based on the design principles observed in nature, they can be applied to many design contexts. Consider natural patterns and shapes that guide human behavior and help us create robust & resilient designs that support and mimic ecosystems.
For examples, why are rivers and leaves shaped like fans? Why do plants have typically between 5-7 branches? Why/how do hexagons work? Spirals? Fractals? How can we borrow these patterns and designs tested by millions of years in the natural world and build on them?
Review the Permaculture Design Intro.
Then pick one of your favorite from the 12 principles and create a logo that helps convey the meaning of that principle. Begin with the way the principle works in nature. Then try to adapt that same principle to humane design of tech–ie tech that nurtures the best human traits and aptitudes. You can create more than one logo if you are testing ideas and would like peer feedback.
Explain your logo in 1-2 paragraphs. Why did you choose the principle? What does it mean in nature? How could it be used to make tech more humane? What short phrase will help designers remember it?
Finally, create a one sentence description of that principle for the logo you created. It can be similar to the original principle, though it would be interesting to see it applied specifically to a tech context.
