SUMMARY:CUGR Final Proposal
DESCRIPTION:italics represent CUGR grant instructions \nAbstract\nSummarize what you intend to accomplish as concisely as possible. The abstract should contain a concise overview of the project. The character limit for the abstract is no more than 1000 characters. \nProject Description\nReviewers will be faculty from a range of disciplines; therefore\, the proposal should be written in general terms\, with sufficient details to allow for scholarly review. The word limit for the project description is 10\,000 characters. \nDescribe your project–what is it\, how will it be made and why is it important. \nDescribe objectives of the research\, the importance of the project to the field\, and how the project will be accomplished. \nDiscuss how this research project fits into your overall academic program and interests \n\nOptions for answering the questions in the description part of the grant include the following:\nThe problem\nWhat is lacking\, or what is the opportunity\, in a field or community that interests you? Whom does it affect and how? What do they need that they don’t have? Why should you or anyone care? How are you specifically suited to meet these challenges/needs in your community? Cite at least three sources that support your concerns about this issue/topic/problem. Here are examples of problems tackled in past capstones.\nOther solutions\nResearch at least three existing projects that come closest to solving the problem you mention. What do they do right? Where do they fall short? Give visuals of 1-2 of these projects if you can.\nYour solution \nDescribe your general approach. How will it embody the many-to-many dynamic of new media? List 2-4 criteria and show how your approach embodies them. Then detail other features of your solution. Describe the outcomes you expect and stakeholders affected.\n\nTimeline\nTimeline will be included in your CUGR project Description. You can use a screenshot of your Project Timeline. \nBudget and Budget Justification\nThe CUGR budget focuses on items you request specifically for the grant\, but if you have (potential) matching funds this will support your request as “match” or “cost-share” \, so include cost share from IMRC equipment\, rooms\, and also NMD grants if they might cover other aspects of the project. \nUp to a maximum of $1\,000 may be requested for student stipend\, supplies or other research related expenses such as travel to present research results in professional meetings and conferences. Optional match or cost-share (either cash or in-kind from your department) may be included in the proposal. \nIn addition to an itemized budget\, a descriptive budget justification is required\, including the nature and approximate value of any match. Only expenses directly associated with the research during the 11/1/18-5/1/19 performance period will be covered. General purpose equipment such as computers will not be supported. \nRecommended: Visualizations\nInclude images\, drawings\, sketches\, video or any other media that will help the CUGR committee visualize your work. \nRecommended: Annotated Bibliography\nDocument your research\, show that you know your subject and are not about to re-invent the wheel. At the end of your proposal create an annotated list 5-15 news articles\, similar projects\, and related sites. Include the title\, a link\, and a 1-2 sentence description (this is the “annotated” part)  of how this link relates to your own capstone. \nCommitment Letter\nFaculty mentors should provide a letter commenting on the student’s research and academic abilities and confirming the faculty member’s commitment to mentoring the student. Faculty can submit their letters online at this link.

SUMMARY:CUGR Proposal Revision
DESCRIPTION:Revise your proposal draft and Add…\nUsing at least 1-2 paragraph each\, revise and improve your CUGR proposal draft. You should be clarifying your description as well as the problem/solution. Additional categories include 1) budget\, 2) project timeline\, 3) preliminary bibliography (this SHOWS it’s “research”–the R in CUGR= Research)\, and 4)  visual media/prototype designs. Submit this as a post/article to class website and personal Portfolio. \nAbstract\nSummarize what you intend to accomplish as concisely as possible. Be sure to indicate somehow how this relates to your values as clarified in your Design Guide Check. \nProblem/Solution\nUsing sources that support your concerns about this issue/topic/problem\, explain a problem or opportunity that your project addresses/solves.  Compare this to other existing projects that come closest to solving the problem you mention\, and describe why your approach is better in specific ways. Your Humane Design work may give you some reasons. Explain how your solution will lead t better quality of life for your audience/users. \nBudget\nCreate a real budget in Goggle Drive\, and give both a direct URL as well as a screen shot of your Budget in your post. Base this on the Needs in your preliminary draft and other needs that arise. \nTimeline\nCreate a Project Timeline with clear 1) Phases\, 2) Tasks for each Phase\, and 3) Milestones–where you achieve specific outcomes key to progress on your project. Take screenshots of your project and include in your CUGR Revision\, and include a URL to your actual Project timeline. \nPreliminary Bibliography\nInclude a list of sources\, with quick descriptions of how they helped you develop your idea. eg “This article explains how most animation templates use racially “white” hairstyles” so I will have to create my own racial diverse “hair” to animate three of my characters.” \nMedia/Visualization\nProvide images\, video\, charts\, maps\, drawings\, visualization\, prototypes\, renderings\, or any other type of visuals that will give a visuals senses of your project. You may include similar projects not just mock-ups of your own work. \nTo see how this material will be used\, see the CUGR Final Proposal which will in turn build upon this draft.

SUMMARY:CUGR Proposal Draft
DESCRIPTION:Template for first draft\nVersion 1.5\nIn at least one paragraph each\, complete the following outline to draft your CUGR proposal. You can copy/past this outline into your own post/article \, then just substitute your content for the instructions. Submit this as a post/article to class website and personal Portfolio. \nAbstract\nSummarize what you intend to accomplish as concisely as possible. Be sure to indicate somehow how this relates to your values as clarified in your Design Guide Check. \nThe problem\nWhat is lacking\, or what is the opportunity\, in a field or community that interests you? Whom does it affect/benefit/impact and how? What do they need that they don’t have? Why should you or anyone care? How are you specifically suited to meet these challenges/needs in your community? \nCite at least three sources that support your concerns about this issue/topic/problem. You may want to use material produced in Preliminary Research and/or other sources. \nOther solutions\nResearch at least three existing projects that come closest to solving the problem you mention. What do they do right? Where do they fall short? \nYour solution\nDescribe your general approach. DO you want to mention New Media strategies and show how your approach embodies them? Or detail other features of your solution? Describe the outcomes you expect and stakeholders/audience affected. \nTasks\nResearch how you would build your solution\, and then write a to-do list of at least 20 tasks required. In place of a few vague ambitions\, show that you have thought through the process by listing numerous narrow tasks\, eg: \n\n\n\nBad\nGood\n\n\nDesign the interface\nDraw mobile app profile views in Illustrator\n\n\nBuild a website\nCreate MySQL database\n\n\nGet feedback\nConduct a poll on Twitter\n\n\n\nYou may want to group these into subcategories\, like Research / Design / Programming / Promotion / Feedback. \nNeeds\nDescribe the practical resources you’ll need to accomplish this task. Which do you already have\, and which do you need? Including any of the following: \n\nCollaborators\nAudience\nSpecial hardware or software\nExhibition space\nWeb host and domain\nLegal agreements\nLife insurance (hopefully not!)\n\nOther options\nAlthough not required for this draft\, in the future you may be asked to complete the following addenda: \n\nAn annotated bibliography (research for the “Problem” and “Other solutions” sections will serve as the starting point for this)\nA project timeline (based on “Tasks”)\nA budget (based on “Needs”)\nA promotion plan\, logo

SUMMARY:Design Guide Check
DESCRIPTION:Review the Design Guide Below\nThen answer the questions which follow based on the values and design principles of your own project.\n \n\nPASTE THE QUESTIONS BELOW INTO YOUR OWN POST\, THEN ANSWER THEM. YOU MAY NEED TO DO THIS MORE THAN ONCE DURING THE DEVELOPMENT OF YOUR PROJECT. \n\nDescribe your project briefly\n1. Project:\n  \n2. Key Values (yours\, and those of project):\nFor example\, your project might support health by getting kids to do winter sports; or it might relieve stress by scheduling time with a puppy in the library. Or it might require cash\, time or attention in short supply by college students. \n  \n3. Measure of success:\n  \nConsider YOUR project and how your design choices may affect each of the SIX human sensitivities described above. Beside each sensitivity\, list ways the project currently engages these\, and ways you might improve on current practices.\n  \n\n\nEmotional\n\n\nAttention\n\n\nSensemaking\n\n\nDecisionmaking\n\n\nSocial Reasoning\n\n\nGroup Dynamics\n\n\n  \nNow develop an action statement for Humane Technology using your evaluation above and prioritization from the previous sheet.\n  \n\n\nIn what ways does your project currently engage Human Sensitivities?\n\nWhich specific elements might warrant redesign?\nAre the success criteria in tension with any sensitivities?\n\n\n\nHow might your project support or elevate human sensitivities?\n\nWhere are humans naturally brilliant at manifesting the value proposition?\nHow might a design element change to better support that brilliance?\nWith social sensitivities\, could the design encourage people to meet the goal in real life? Consider the “Natural Anti-depressants” in Johan Hari’s Lost Connections\, for example.\nDo any success criteria need to shift to support human sensitivities?\n\n\n\nAction Statement\n\nWhat is one thing you want to learn more about?\nWhat would you like to discuss with your team?\nWhat would you like to design or prototype?\nAre there any new design principles you might employ?\n\n\n\n  \n  \nwww.humanetech.com \n  \n

SUMMARY:Preliminary Research
DESCRIPTION:Values\nConduct the following research to help you craft the first draft of your Text based proposal. \nReview your notes from Humane Tech and the Design Guide.  Consider how your project addresses the concerns and values expressed by the design guide. Is there a way your project could support an even better quality of life? And will it benefit all people or just those with the most resources? (500 words) \nSimilar Context/Audience\nFind 3 other articles online that explore issues relevant to those you will explore in your project. If you are looking at stories about race\, for example and your project uses VR\, what are the hot issues about race in VR\, and how does your project address them? If you are working in animation\, are there issues for creating animation for marginal races? For example are the templates race-sensitive? Does your toolkit contain crew cuts and/or kinky hair?  You may want to include articles found using “Google Scholar” if you want a solid research component in your CUGR proposal. (500 words) \nRelated Work\nFind at least 3 other projects that share some technical similarity to yours\, so they are helpful to your thinking. Similarities could be in technology used\, interface design\, etc. (500 words) \n  \nYou can add other related content as well that helps you understand your topic\, tech or audience better. Just add it on with your own category. \n  \nBasically make yourself as smart as you can about the area of your interest/issue; and find other related projects. \nYour goal is to have about 1500 words (about 6 pages) of writing/notes\, in a well-organized outline form that you can use in your proposal to clarify content and explain the research goals.

SUMMARY:Class Logistics
DESCRIPTION:Enable AirPlay\nAs you know\, you must be able to display your work on a screen via AirPlay. If you don’t have an iPad or recent Mac running Mountain Lion or better\, you must purchase AirParrot ($13)  There will be no exceptions. \nInstall Slack\nSign up for this course’s Slack account with your maine.edu email. \nEnroll in Course Site\nUsing your maine.edu account\, enroll as a user on the class website. This will enable you to follow assignments\, keep up with due dates\, leave feedback for your peers\, and post work due.. \nEngage Your Portfolio\nCreate a category in your own portfolio for your capstone project\, like “capstone”.  Also please create sub-categories that correspond to class topics: research\, timeline\, budget\, proposal\, grant\, design\, promotion\, funding\, social media\, audience.  It might be easiest if you use the class categories\, but there’s no reason you can’t also use your own–a post can have many categories.  Subcategories should all have “capstone” as the parent category. You will post most of your assignments on both your own blog\, and also on the class website. \nReview Google Drive\nIf necessary this class will use a dedicated  Google Drive with unlimited storage for large files\, video etc.
