Disclaimer! This event did not actually occur, it was just an idea I wanted to explore!
The night is quiet. Nothing disturbs the calmness of this rustic back road, save for the light flakes of snow that have begun to fall from the sky. Abruptly, a vehicle disturbs this silent night, cutting through twilight like sheers on dark cloth leaving but two strips trailing behind. Inside the vehicle, a man drives home from work. His intentions are to return home post haste, likely to reunite with a loved one, or if nothing else to retire after the strenuous hardships of professional life. In either case, while these are noble ambitions, they preoccupy his mind. He looks down to turn up the volume on the radio. When he looks back to the road, there’s something in the distance rapidly approaching. It takes a few seconds to understand what he’s seeing, but then it hits him, It’s a person directly in the path of his oncoming vehicle. Theres no time to slow down and this person doesn’t seem to know of is impending doom, as they make no attempt at evading their certain demise. In a last ditch effort, and without the time to slow down, the driver swerves into the tree line just in time to avoid certain demise for this stranger, but clipping them non the less. Once again, the back road is calm and quiet. The snow is now beginning to gain mass in large, accumulating flakes resting around this disheartening scene. Perhaps, this is to cover up the events that have just transpired, and nature’s plan is to reclaim these two souls back to her warm bosom. However, fate and nature are often as fickle as man, and often bicker even more. Fate saw fit In that instant to resuscitate this driver, and tear him from natures warm embrace. He wakes with a jolt and a pounding headache. In the chaos, the vehicle had spun around to face the road. The only light to be seen comes from the headlights, illuminating the heap in the road that had moments ago been walking. Thoughts of lawsuit pass through his mind as he slowly unbuckles his seat belt and opens the car door. He struggles to dial the number 911 into his cellphone. No service. His mind races at what to possibly do in this situation no phone, car stuck, someones out in the road most likely in agony possibly dead. He runs to the body to check its condition. To the mans horror, it is a young boy not much older than his son. Luckily he’s still alive but very cold. He carries the boy carefully to the car in the ditch and covers him in a spare blanket. After he uselessly tries to push his car back to the road to no avail and not wanting to stray too far from the boy, he realizes the best course of action is to wait out the night and try to flag down someone in the morning. He joins the boy in the car. As he eventually drifts off to sleep, once again the area becomes quiet and peaceful. The snow continues to fall.
For this scene I think using the lights from the car as the only set lights would be interesting to experiment with. I also think a cool angle would be a dash cam type shot as well as some footage from ideally a camera, but an ipad/phone would work to get some establishing and wide shots. In this kind of scene I think less is more when it comes to creative angles. Ideally, personal miniature microphones or boom mikes would be used for sound, but realistically it would probably be built in microphones. I haven’t decided if a soundtrack would add or detract from a scene like this.
