Analysis 1
In the movie Southpaw, the main character Billy is introduced with a shot of his hands being bound by gauze before a fight of some sort. The choice of audio in this scene is well done because it puts you in the perspective of Billy as he is about to enter the fight. The song was very loud and meant to hype Billy up. This song also represents the space that the movie was taking place in. When Billy goes out to the stage the song stops playing, but the area around them kept the same feeling going because of all the people cheering.
Many different shots were taken throughout the intro of the movie, some more valuable than others. For instance, when Billy is first shown in the movie I noticed immediately that there was a sense of dominance portrayed by his character because of the shot that was taken of him. The shot was a low angle close up of Billys face that showed his facial expressions and let the viewer read how he was feeling going into the fight. Another series of shots that were well executed were during the opening fight of the movie. The shots were rapidly switching from close up, so wide shots in all different kinds of angles. I think this was a well thought out decision because it flows nicely with the rapid movements of the fighters and allows the viewer to see the angles of the different punches that are thrown. These shots also made the punches more dramatic. For example, in one scene the shot switches from a wide shot looking over the ring to a medium close up shot of the two fighters right as Billy throws a powerful uppercut that makes his opponent stagger into the ropes.
Overall The intro of the movie Southpaw was very well done, and sets up a lot of the plot for the rest of the movie to come. The use of different audio effects to enhance the fight, and increase the emotion of Billy were impactful, and well thought out decisions. Similar can be said about the use of the different shots and edits that were made pre and post fight.
In Inja, There is a sense of a business, or operation that everyone is working at because of the matching uniforms and the diligent work and movement of all background characters throughout the intro to the film. Two of the three main characters are introduced just seconds into the film. The young boy and the dog are seen playing together with a rope, this signifies a bond between them early on in the film to make their connection more meaningful throughout the film.
In Inja, the editing decisions made by the creators really set up a lot of important scenes. One scene that made good use of decisive editing was when the young boy was taking rope from the flagpole. The scene takes its time and the edits are cutting from the boy, to the house over and over again. The cuts to his face were shorter than the cuts to the house, and I think this was to build a bit of suspense because he knew he wasn’t supposed to be doing that. This is also the scene where I could tell exactly that the setting was a farm house in Africa being run by slaves. I could confirm this because on the shots of the house, you could see multiple people working on the house, and they were all people of color. The last cut was the boy slowly putting the knife and the piece of rope in his pocket, to me this scene had a lot of meaning because you could tell the boy was extremely scared of getting caught and in my mind a very generalized plot started formulating in my head. I could tell that somehow this rope was going to cause a problem later, and I knew from the way the boy took the rope that the owner of the farm was not a nice man at all. The second scene where I thought the editing was well done was the scene with the dog being kicked by the master. The editing cuts were made so that they could make the scene look lifelike without actually abusing an animal. The editing was done very smoothly, and the cuts were placed perfectly so they could film the kicking part without the dog in the bag.
Overall This movie was very impressive because of all the elements the creator decided to include in it. The editing decisions were perfect by making the movie move from one scene to another almost flawlessly. Also the decision of different shots were important because they set a dominant visual between characters that altered throughout the movie. This film was very emotionally impactful and gets its message across very well for the short amount of time it has.
