Analysis 2 – ThanisornJ

A. Content (trailer)

The two movie trailers are Nanook of the North and Baraka. In these two movies. they have a different style of presenting the movie.

Nanook of the North has journalistic mode as the written titles that explain what the story is about.

In which, ” Nanook ” presents more about the documentary and the life of the hunter who was one of the greatest hunter(Inuit) in the North. The central subject of Nanook of the North is the hunter himself (Nanook). That is presented in many shots in the trailer. The filmmaker tried to let the audience understand what they were trying to let us focus on. The lifestyle shots are naturally and seemed innocent. “Innocent” in such a way that, the persons acting in the film is trusted and allowed the outsiders (filmmakers) to shoot the film so naturally. In my opinion, it would be really difficult to interact and communicate with the tribes. As they were not familiar with how their traditions look. The film was strongly challenging in my opinion.

Mostly, the shots of Nanook and the lifestyle of Inuit showed in the trailer are the information for the viewer to understand the topic. The snowstorm at the end is the villain in this movie.

There are two types in the footage that can be seen clearly. One (A-roll) is the main character “Nanook” and two (B-roll) is the surrounding environments like snow, animals, people who hunting and living their lifestyle. The sound bridge is presented cleary when the scene is changed from the lifestyle, how they lived to the snowstorm and people and animals were suffering from the cold.

Three moments that stand out in my opinion are first, when the hunter, Nanook looked directly in the camera. This shot shows the viewer the main character of the movie. Second, the shot when the tribe people used the sled dog to travel along. This shows the lifestyle of how people and dogs are interacting and working together to survive the snow. Third, the snowstorm scene is the final out that representing the suffer and survival feeling that the tribes have to face.

While “Baraka” has journalistic mode as the voice over that displays the story of the movie. It seemed to be a quiet story where the pictures narrate the story instead of people talking. The central subject is the faith, trust, and worship of people from different places around the world. Not only that but nature, the disaster, wildlife that shows in the trailer. In my opinion, the trailer gives the feeling of mysterious and unknown of the true meaning behind this movie. We need to watch the full movie to understand the concept of the film. The cinematic scene provides the viewer with the information along with the voice over. The footage does not really tell us much about the meaning behind but it invites us to try and watch the movie to understand it.

The three moments that stand out are first, the disaster from the nature. Because, it tells us something about nature tries to do something to human world as human is the main factor. Second, the scene that shows different tribes, people around the world living their lives and praying to the god. This interests the fact that people still believe in something powerful that would protect them. However, it might be in different forms. Monkey scene, the scene that shows the monkey in the pond looking around. It gives the idea of that wildlife will be including in this film and will be one of the factor of the story.

In contrast, the two stories have different styles to display their trailers. One is voice over while the other one is written text. It is important to look how the trailers using styles and sounds to provide the clue of the story however, not losing the point of interest in the movie.

B. C. & D. (Content, Structure, and cinematic style)

The film that I choose to watch is “Baraka”. I would like to break into 3 parts. The part one is the beginning of the movie where it shows tribes and how people live together with nature. Wildlife is also lived together with us and it is the beginning of how people learn to develop tradition and culture. Learn to live and survive the nature. The second part is when the many parts of the world are developing and human started to go in fast pace with the technology, and however, destroy each others for resource. Exploiting the resource from the nature. Making the world hurt carelessly in such a way that they wanted to serve our demands. Third, the almost ending scene in my thought is that people tried to pray and be strong together. Asking forgiveness to the God. However, the connection between each others are unlimited. They believe to what they believe. However, they are praying o live happy life for another day.

The transition points between each section are how the songs are changed. The theme is different from each other. Like past to present and to the future outcome. The scene is different when it changes from the tribes doing something using nature to divide each section with the help of sounds.

The movie is non-narrative and non-verbal. It is cinematography and the only visible scene would give the viewer an idea to think in a different way.

The timing of each section that the movie presents to us. It tells us how the images should be understandable. It leaves a message in each different scenes to let the viewer thinks and try to understand the world that we live in.

This is high-quality cinematography. Most shots are landscape shots for nature and how the buildings are. The wide shots allow the viewer to have varieties of perspective. It shot on a wide scale. That impacts the viewer to look and find how beautiful nature, how destructive the wars, how worshipping the people to God. It could connect everyone together indirectly. Most shots are in the deep depth of field and light are different in each section to make the viewer focus on the movie. In my opinion, the dark ending scene where the sky was shown with the star was related the section to before the ending where people in the movie were praying to their own God and believe to their own religion.

There are mostly medium pace but slow and quick in each different scenes.

Many shots are held more that 10 seconds to let viewers observe the activities of people in the scene. Like the tribes are dancing around the thing that they believe in. Quick pace is used when the filmmaker wanted to make time pass quickly like the shot in the city where people walk around so fast. Using low shutter speed. The sequences move forward in term of a presentation of clearly progressing images. However, the shots are thoughtful that viewer might have to sit back and watch trying to understand them.

From my perspective, the filmmaker used the voice over style to make the story interesting to jump into. It gives the feeling of mysterious and unknown. The goal of the filmmaker in my opinion is to provide viewer the main subject of the story and how it is going to be presented.

Observer is the one that responsible for this documentary. This is because the way he gives information in the trailer. It did not tell us the meaning behind but just give us the main subject and how it is going to represent. We still not know what is going to happen in the movie. Unlike, the action film that we can guess the actor would fight a lot and might somehow win and have a happy final ending.

I feel like in the trailer that it would be better if the person just said the name of the movie. It would make people interesting to find out what it is going to be. If there are proper methods introducing in the trailer. Would make the movie more interesting.
