Time Persists:
1a. There is dialogue in this film.
1b. Most of the time, the dialogue is accompanied by music or other sound effects. However, there is one spot in the film where the dialogue is heard alone. This is when the kids have a confrontation with the adults.
1c. I would say the dialogue in this film is more on the occasional side. There is a much bigger focus on sound effects and music rather than dialogue between characters. When there is dialogue, it is given at a relatively comfortable pace, with a faster pace as the scene ramps up in tension.
1d. The cuts are made to focus on whomever is speaking, so the audience can focus on that character.
2a. There are sound effects heard in this sequence.
2b. There are certain sound effects that are diegetic and offer a unique sound, such as the xylophone to represent the kids’ playful spirit. The rustling of the leaves help establish the setting. The kids’ toys having sound effects that replicate the authentic sound that the toys are based off is also an interesting choice.
2c. The xylophone is a very important part of the story in the sense of helping the audience understand that the people they are seeing are representing children.
2d. The sound effects work together to recreate child like wonder in the first half of the film, where the more serious and darker tones come when the adults arrive, representing the severity of the situation.
3a. There is music in this sequence. It’s instrumental in nature, but is playing a well known tune. It uses a xylophone. The rhythm is slower.
3b. The music is in the forefront in the beginning and the end, but during the conflict it plays a more supporting role.
3c. The music in this piece is to set the tone of the sequence.
4a. The sound design serves the drama of the piece by giving context of what the scenes mean and thus giving the audience a better understanding of the conflict.
4b. The xylophone in this piece evokes a nostalgic feeling in order for the audience to reminisce about their days as a child.
4c. The sound design helped reflect the thematic elements of being a child.
Joe:
1a-d. There is no dialogue in this film.
2a. There are sound effects in this sequence.
2b. The scrubbing of the shoes, along with a few other key sounds, are very prominent in this film. I believe the prominence reflect our main character’s focus on these sounds.
2c. The volume of the sound effects reflects represent how they are a change in the monotony of the establishment Joe is in, they contrast the usual sounds and/or show how important these sounds are to Joe.
2d. The sound effects work together to show the break in the norm in the establishment Joe is locked in.
3a. There is instrumental music in this film, and it is of a bluesy/country genre. The rhythm is a on the slower side.
3b. The music is more in the background of this film, putting more emphasis on the sound effects.
3c. The music in this piece is used to accent the film, and helps support some of the emotional themes of the film.
4a. The sound design in this film is its main way of telling the story and is the main source of telling the drama of the piece.
4b. The sound design gives the audience an emotional connection with the main character, Joe, with the music giving us a sense of his loneliness and the sound effects giving us a sense of the things he finds important.
4c. The sounds help reflect the thematic elements of loneliness and monotony in the film.
