Time:
Dialogue is used sparingly, and is often accompanied by some sound effect immediately before it. Throughout the video there is light whispering and other vocals that are introduced and gradually fade. Because dialogue is used so infrequently, it is significant where it does occur, namely the conflict between the two parties. Cuts are made between exchanges. Sound effects play a significant role in the video, and are the most used sonic tool other than the music. Percussive and shimmery effects are used to build tension throughout, and other sound effects serve to exaggerate the importance of objects such as the toy sword and the clock.
Music sets the tone of the video, as it opens and concludes on the same music, first childlike, then more somber. The stark differences between moments of silence and sound effects or music serves to build tension and provide relief throughout the video. While the visual elements are important, it is the audio that serves as the most meaningful aspect of the video. Audio is used to set a childish but also dramatic tone, it establishes unity and a passage of time. Sound effects are also used to identify characters and overlying themes, such as the passage of time through the use of bell tones.
Joe:
Dialogue is almost entirely absent throughout the video, with the possible exception of laughter from a background character. In this piece, music and sound effects play significant roles in communicating emotions and the setting. Music is used to open and conclude the film, establishing a sense of connection between the events of the film, mimicking the similar visual elements. Sound effects in the film are the most profound aspect, and are often the only audio in an otherwise silent film. These sound effects are boosted and exaggerated, from footsteps to dripping liquids, the loud and abrupt sound effects create a sense of discomfort not only for the characters but for the audience. By keeping the film mostly quiet, a sense of the setting is established as somewhere devoid of excitement or life. The exaggeration of clinking keys signals that the characters inside are not free to leave, and the main character’s silence in the face of exaggerated sounds from secondary characters establishes his discomfort. Audio serves as the primary means of communicating the setting, emotions, and themes of the video without ever saying a word.
