Analysis 3 – Tim Clark

Time Persists

Dialogue

In the short film “Time Persists” there is very minimal dialogue. At the beginning of the film there is light dialogue. Mainly it is some light music with young kids singing. Some times the dialogue and its pacing will change to fit the scene. This is when dialogue and framing come hand in hand.

Effects

The enhanced background noise is causes fear and panic. Between the children singing in the background and how loud the crunching of the leaves are freighting. The best effect is at the end of the film when the kids draw their own weapons and when they take them out it makes the noise related to the weapon.

Music

The music is used for a dramatic effect. The nursery rhymes are the main source of sound. They do a very good job at creating suspense using this method.

Literary and Theatrical Element

With minimal dialogue they needed to use sounds and music to communicate the feelings of the actors without them reading lines. For me the music combined with the shots made me scared for the protagonist. For some reason nursery rhymes have now become terrifying versions of music. The natural noises enhance the sense of our silence. The only thing he could hear is his own movements because it was so quiet in the woods.

Dialogue

It has no dialogue at all. Sometimes you can hear things in the backgrounded that some people could argue is dialogue. But if it takes an argument to prove it is dialogue then it shouldn’t be called dialogue.

Effects

There isn’t much sounds that are used as effects in this film. They do enhance the raw sounds such as footsteps, keys and so on.

Music

The only time music appears in the film is when the main character is alone in his room washing his shoes. It is a harmonica playing in the background.

Literary and Theatrical Element

The literary and theatrical element are use to show how lonely the man is. He never gets spoken to. If another patient is around him they don’t even look at him and go one as if he isn’t there. With he enhance sounds it emphasizes the loneliness and isolation the hospital.
