Analysis 3_CaitlynS

  1. Dialogue: There is dialogue in the video. However, the dialogue exchanged is very few in the context of the video which conveys the importance of the interaction between the characters and the meaning behind their words and interactions. The dialogue was followed by this stillness which demonstrates the tension between the characters. Towards the end, the stillness and the short dialogue contrast greatly to the playful and curious sounds of children playing in the natural world in the beginning. The dialogue that is exchanged is brief and pronounced. The characters do not babble on or hesitate to explain what they mean. There is demand in their words. They have a tone which reflects the emotions of the character. In between the exchanges there is even silence to demonstrate how intense this is for the two groups exchanging words. Cuts are then made to show some of the characters reactions to the words shared. This makes the ending even more tense and dramatic.
  2. Effects: There are sound effects heard in the sequence. For example in the ending when adulthood and time clashes with childhood and play, the “main character” uses a toy sword as a weapon which clashes with the clock. It makes the noise of an actual sword which I believe the realism has meaning to how the playful characters perceive their play. There is also significant noise from the setting such as the sounds of nature and leaves rustling. Objects which made noise in the video also included the toy xylophone or the clashing of the toy sword and clock at the ending. The noises which tended to be more significant were louder.
  3. Music: There is no music incorporated throughout the video but their is an instrumental of the toy xylophone that is being played during the beginning that has significance. It conveys the playful and delicateness of childhood.
  4. Literary and theatrical elements: The sound design of the film serves a purpose as it adds to the climatic parts and actions of the characters. Like for example the toy xylophone brought this scary feel to the environment and characters although it was just a group of adult children playing in the woods. All the images and motion of the footage felt paced enough to go along with the music, for example the cameras where not whipped around to get a lapse, but slow enough to ease the audience in and gain a better sense of what exactly the video was about. The sound also helps set this tone of innocence and playfulness which is cut brief by the cold silence of adulthood and tension which seems to be the point the producers are trying to convey to the audience.

Joe

  1. Dialogue: There is no dialogue in this piece. The producer clearly wanted the mundane sounds that the audience may overlook in the real world and not even notice, and make them significant and prominent.
  2. Effects: There does not seem to be any sound effects but natural noises, like laughing, keys jingling, gulping, etc. So therefore there is a significant amount of noise coming from the environment that the main character Joe resides in. Each sound seems to be equally prominent because what the producer wanted to emphasize was how the lack of what makes us so human, our ability to communicate to others our emotions and thoughts, leaves silence and frustration. Certain moments which seemed to add to the plot was when Joe walked by a receptionist which could not contain her laughter over the phone, which completely contrasted with the unhappy silent hall which Joe walked through. It physically made me uncomfortable for the characters. Along with that, there were moments when the guards keys jangled too loud that made me uneasy or when the man sat next to Joe and gulped some obscure drink. All these noises one does not usually focus on but when there is nothing else to think about and you feel trapped, it seems that all you can hear is the small things that will bother you and will drive you crazy. I am sure that this concept is something similar to what the producers and director wanted to communicate to their audience.
  3. Music: There is music in the sequence, at the beginning when Joe is introduced. It is strictly an instrumental which has a sad old harmonica playing. It seems to be forefront music but quickly fades away as if it were there throughout the entire piece, there would no longer be attention drawn to the mundane sounds of the interactions of everyday people. It is slow and introduces the film, it sets a tone for the video.
  4. Literary and theatrical elements: The sound design of the film purposely aims to make the viewer just as uncomfortable as the characters but making the ordinary sounds that one often ignores, all that you can hear. It works with the images and the motion of them because it rightfully demonstrates how the sounds are reacted to and the response of each character to the sound. The sounds are the plot of the story, it is all that one can presume a plot from along with the motions and footage which have a strong correlation.
