Analysis 4 – OliviaBurton
- Story Elements:
In the film “The Elevator”, we are first introduced to what appears to be the main character. The viewer is not notified of a name or story belonging to him besides the sheer fact that he is pressing the elevator button and one can notice that the elevator appears to be getting more and more crowded.
Automatically, showing a panicked emotion, the main character continues to step off of the crowded elevator due to the fear that there is a weight capacity limit that is being reached. Ironically, once he steps off the elevator and decides to take another- he notices this elevator contains all sick people. Which raises the question- can he ever win? The protagonist went through all of this trouble to avoid people whether they be sick or not- just to prolong his trip to the floor he desired.
- Manipulating Light:
In the film, there are many intentional aspects visually that one can notice that contribute to the overall aesthetic of it. Such as, the usage of varying light sources. Seen in the elevator, there is a dim tone and less light seen rather than outside of the elevator and in the hallways. This could be translated and contribute more to the protagonists view on the situations that stemmed from the elevator. Along with the safe assumption that he did not see these elevators as “positive” environments due to the incidents. So, that being said the use of more light outside of the elevator could also be seen as his escape when he does leave the elevators due to awkward encounters.
- Framing:
The framing for all of the shots throughout the film is seen as majorly consistent. One can safely assume that these shots were taken on a tripod (perhaps a moving track for parts?). Another large aspect I had noticed was the huge respect to the Rule of Thirds. Seen in almost every shot was respecting this rule by placing the main character either directly in the center or slightly off centered where the lines of intersection mark the frame.
- Visual Style:
The visual style I had retrieved from this film was the sense of awkward humor. Now, this is not just generalized comedy, but the specific type of comedy that one gets from uncomfortable situations. With the blandness of emotions and colors it helps contribute to the odd feeling that stems from the instances that occur in the film.
