Analysis 4 – Tim Clark

The Elevator

Story Elements

In this short film the protagonist is the man in the first scene. He needs to use the elevator to get up to another floor.

The crisis he runs into is the people in the elevator. When he enters the first elevator it is filled with over weight people. This makes him nervous, thinking that the elevator cant handle the weight of everyone. This causes him to exit the elevator and wait for a new one. Once he thinks the crisis was averted he is met with a new one. The next elevator is filled with sick people who are coughing all around him.

Manipulating Light

The lightning and color in “The Elevator” is relatively dull. The protagonist is wearing a black shirt while standing in the middle of the crisis. Most of the overweight people are wearing very loud and colorful putting an emphasis on the fact they are the crisis and it is all around him. Another lighting that puts an emphasis on his situation is the floor number light. With it much brighter, its shows that it is saving grace of the crisis and he needs it to land on his floor.

Framing

The framing of the shots allow you feel what the protagonist is feeling. When he is in the elevator with the overweight people he is shoved all they way into the back where you can almost not see him, making him seems so small. Each scene is filmed close up. This gives a feeling of how cramped and tight the space is. The floor number lights are also shot close up, showing that its the only thing the protagonist can think of. He just wants to see his number light up.

Visual Style

The filmmakers very effective with their filming style. They made the viewer feel just as cramped as the protagonist. If the shots weren’t filmed close up it would make his situation less urgent. No one wants to stuck in a cramped elevator, and the visual style is putting you inn a cramped elevator.
