Analysis 4 – WillR
In the Elevator the main character is a guy who enters the elevator in the lobby going to the top floor of the building, which is the main crisis of the film. The struggles of the main character is that elevator becomes closer and closer to the weight limit. The main character exits the elevator, only to get in another elevator full of people with swine flu. This becomes the new normal at the end of the film.
The lighting in the film is very warm, accentuating the colors in the clothes the passengers in the elevator are wearing. The film is relatively well lit, there are not a lot of shadows visible within the elevator.
There are a variety of shots used in the film. There are a couple full shots in the the film used to introduce the main character and “antagonist”. Extreme close ups are used for numbers such as the floor numbers and the main character’s calculator on his phone.
Analyzing this film to compare to my own final project is pretty useful, as my own project aims to emulate pieces of this film. One of the things I hope to emulate is the tone of the film, a lot of buildup for a humorous ending, choosing to focus on visual storytelling with little to no dialogue. To visually compare the ideas I have for my final project, I will likely be choosing a contrasting style. I plan on having darker visuals and trying to emulate the type of lighting around sunset to focus on shadows. As for the types of shots, I will be focusing more on close ups, and extreme close ups to highlight smaller details.
The story elements for my own film would be something like these:
Beginning: The main character comes home late after a long day of work and decides to make a cup of coffee with their French press.
Middle: While the main character brews their coffee they are bombarded with stressful things like work emails or texts, and bad news. They try to ignore all these things, instead focus on the process of brewing coffee. (The shots of the coffee brewing process will include elements of Japanese tea ceremonies and Ethiopian coffee ceremonies.)
End: The new normal is that the main character has brewed a cup of coffee and when they taste it the discover that it tastes bad.
