Analysis-First-Colleen-G

For this first analysis we were shown a video from a different culture with few subtitles all in a foreign language. Visually the video movement by moving the camera with the action of the people and dog. Through visuals of the surroundings they portray the enviornment in which the little boy is in and grows up in detecting that this dog he found may be a small peice of happiness for him. They were able to use close ups on both the dogs and the people to show emotions. Through the emotions conveyed we were able to connect the different scenes into a storyline. There were many jumpcuts that were able to give the audience a sense of the surrounding environment in which both characters were in. A scene that this worked very well with many jumpcuts was the scene where the boy was cutting the rope on the flag and the camera switched from him cutting the rope to his surroundings to the dog and to a man in the window. This tells us that he is being secretive, based on the other scenes before we were able to tell that the young boy is a slave. When it jumpcuts to the man in the window we are able to tell that he is the slave owner/ the young boy works for him. In this video the small jumpcuts even if they were a couple of seconds long like the shot of the flags they helped push along the story.

Part B

In the Indiana Jones movie opening he is introduced in a cave staring at a relic while holding a bag of sand. He puts his hand in the sandbag and takes some sand out of the bag trying to match the weight of the relic. With a quick swift move he replaces the relic with the bag of sand. These show that he is clever, quick, and precise and are shown throughout the rest of the clip as well as the movie. These traits are again shown when he is racing against time trying to not get hurt by the traps that were set later in the scene. In Inja the characters personalities were not expressed much up until the moment of the man kicking the dog and at the end. By the end both characters personalities had changed and they were different, it is hard to say which characteristics passed through because there years in time we did not witness in which each character changed. The setting is very dramatic and intense because of the lighting and dark, dusty surroundings. In Inja the surroundings were much different and were taken place outside in a much brighter environment. In Indiana Jones there were mostly wide shots which set the tone of an intense shots closer to his face to really show his emotions. The pace of the clip was very fast and intense the filmmakers were able to achieve this effect by making many jump cuts and camera switching within a certain amount of time. One jumpcut that helped intensify the scene was filming at a tilted angle Jones trying to get through the closing door, once he gets through he accidently leaves behind the whip. The camera then cuts straight to the other side of the door where the whip is then back to Jones then another tilted angle at him reaching back to the whip. With all these cuts so close together it adds to the fast pace action going on in the scene and makes it flow like he is moving in one direction to get out of the cave. I think for both movies the visual element of different angles and intense cuts create a strong impact on the audience. In Jones the cuts help create an intense dramatic sensation within the viewer. Inja creates a dramatic sensation as well with many cuts during the scene of the dog being kicked in the bag along with sound it creates a very emotional scene.
