This film used several filming techniques that makes the film easy to follow and understand for any viewer. Some qualities that make this film easy to follow is the short length and the few characters the film actually involves. Consider the film has almost no dialog, this limits the viewers focus to every little action performed by the characters and the little details a viewer might miss if they were focusing on the dialog instead. Which in this film, the actions and details are crucial to the storyline. With most of the scenes involving the boy, it’s very easy to quickly observe what life is like for this boy. So it’s basically a way of introducing a character without physically saying anything. This is more of an obvious observation but the story is progressed by details changing such as the flag change and the age of the boy. When it came to introducing the other characters in the film it was nothing more than a single word or a whistle for the introduction of the dog, which ends up basically becoming the main character of the story other than the boy. And for the older man, he was quickly introduced as well when he began giving the boy commands. And it shortly became apparent what his character was. Even the little things helped show who the characters were. For instance, the older man had a gun which shows that he has power in this particular story. And the boy was purposely presented to be hot, sweaty, and tired which can give the viewer the idea that this boy is constantly being told what to do and doesn’t have much time to himself. Overall, the film using very little dialog but still manages to tell a good story using small details and actions of the characters.
Indiana Jones
- In this particular scene in Indiana Jones there are only two characters presented. Each introduced in their own way. To start, Indiana Jones is introduced right off the bat when he is preparing himself to take the idol off the stand. In the very first seconds of the video if you look closely at his eyes he gives the idol the look of, “I’ve been trying to get this for a long time”. That immediately shows that he is determined and has been determined to get this idol for what ever reason. It shows him cautiously trying to replace the idol with a bag of sand so that the traps won’t be set off. So in order to know to do that, you kinda have to have sense of what you’re doing and that is shown here with Indiana Jones. The other guy that he is with is introduced a little bit differently. His first scene in the video he appears to be a little scared while Indiana Jones is fearless. So that shows that this guy was dragged along to this particular point by Indiana Jones and that he might not be so important. Which is proven just a couple minutes later when he betrays Indiana Jones and is killed almost instantly.
- Immediately I noticed that all the attention was put on the idol and Indiana Jones. This shows the importance of the character and the object. Everywhere else on the set is poorly lit intentionally to focus the intention on Indiana Jones. This is the case for the entirety of the video. All throughout the chasing scenes the attention is put on Indiana Jones. Although there are few instances where the focus will be put on the giant boulder to show how fast it is moving.
- The scene begins with an over the shoulder shot from the perspective of the idol. This shows that all the attention is being put onto the idol with the way Indiana Jones is looking at it. There are also cuts to the other character who is looking at the idol like he’d just seen a ghost. The scene builds suspense by cutting back to to the guy watching and the over the should shot from the idol of Indiana Jones. Later on the in the video when they are being chased by falling rocks and rolling boulders there will be cuts from all sorts of different angles to help show how close Indiana Jones is to being run over by the boulder.
- In the beginning the pace of the film is rather slow. But this can be referred to as the “calm before the storm”. Within a few seconds the pace of the film switches from slow and cautious to fast and suspenseful. Two cuts that really stood out to me was the cut from the skeleton on the wall to Indiana Jones up against the wall in the same position as the skeleton. This shows that Indiana Jones was close to becoming one of the skeletons as the camera quickly pans to the left showing the guy who ditched him nailed against the wall.
- The lighting plays a huge role in this video. They use the lighting to help draw the attention of the viewer to whatever they want the attention of the viewer to be on. I feel like this movie was very well done, however in present day most movies will use more special effects and different/more advanced lighting techniques.
