Because the man made the dog think that the boy was the one who hurt him it ultimately killed him.

The boy runs to get his pills and when he gets to the man the dog will not let him close enough to give the man his pills.

The white man brings the boy out to work. The man tries to help pull a pole out of the ground and seems to have a heart attack.

Before they leave to go out and work the man is shown taking some sort of pill. (foreshadowing)

The flag that is risen is changed once the boy is grown because of a different rule of power in the area.

The dog only listens to the boy in the beginning. So the plantation owner abuses the dog in a way so the dog believes the the young boy was the one who abused him.
