Baracka:

A1. The the purpose of the documentary is to show all the different perspectives from around the world and how they all connect to life as a whole.

A2. We are shown many different settings throughout the trailer. There are several different scenes of nature, animals, and people. However, there is no narration in the doc so as viewers we must interpret the visuals and make our own connections to the variety of footages shown.

A3. There are a few shots that are taken from a distance that are meant to capture the horizon or a large landscape. This really stood out to me because these shots are not at all easy to get. They are important because it allows the viewer to really get a feel for how things are in places they might not be familiar with. Another moment from the trailer that really stood out to me were the shots of larges amounts of people crammed into small spaces. Wheather it’s because they are all praying/coming together or because they are all doing the same thing like traveling or doing things on a daily basis that a person must do in order to survive.

The Prisoner:

A1. This doc is about how someone was falsely accused of planning to kill Tony Blair.

A2. The trailer starts by showing how happy this man is and that he is living a normal life all until he is taken in the wrong. There are two types of music used in this doc trailer. Right in the middle of the trailer the music changes drastically. It goes from just background music to intense music when he begins talking about how he was treated as a prisoner. This was done to add intensity to the trailer.

A3. The home videos, the part where he is taken as a prisoner, and the part where he is explaining what happened while he was taken prisoner. These stood out to me because they all bring completely different moods to the trailer. Within seconds it would go from a happy home video to an invasion of law enforcement.

B1. I chose the documentary Virunga. If I were to break this doc down into three parts, I would start with the introduction for the first part. A back story is given which pretty much sets the tone for the rest of the doc. Then I would say that the next part would be about the park itself and the “wars” harming the park. Lastly I would say the last part would be the summary of harmful events that hurt the national park. Making the point clear why the doc was made in the first place.

B2. The transition points consisted of what some would call background music or calming music that allows the viewer to regain their thoughts about what they just watched and prepares them for a new subject.

B3. The doc is a non-narrative doc. The filmmakers use dialog from the people they are filming or they will use audio clips from other clips or sounds that they capture while filming the documentary.

B4. Images will be presented where it is better to have an image than to show video when they talk about certain things. Some of the images gathered and used are not very easy to capture. So the fact that the images used are so powerful and unique, they are able to use them throughout the doc and still get the message across.

C1. The cinematography is outstanding in this doc. There are a wide variety of angles that show many different perspectives which I believe is important for a documentary. When a happier topic is being addressed the colors will be brighter and happier colors. But when the doc takes deep turns toward that sadness parts the colors will darken. The color changes are important in that they control the mood of the film.

C2. The pace of the editing varies throughout the doc. In the beginning there were lots of shorts scenes and fast cuts when they were showing old footage. But this was intentional as this would help intensify the doc and make it more intriguing . Scenes that were held for longer than 10 seconds were mostly interviews but there were some shots by the reporter that were extended on to show more of what this reporter was seeing.

C3. The way this doc is set up there is an alternative pattern of shots but the information is still presented clearly. The shots are all tied together so it works out for the film.

D1. The two main perspectives in this doc is the perspective of the reporter and the perspective of the Congo people. There are also other perspectives given such as the gorillas and caretakers. I think the main goal of this doc was to just make people aware of what was going on. Because I’ll be honest I had no idea any of this was going on until I watched the documentary. But this doc is also showing the dangers to the Congo people and the gorillas in the area. The reporter states that sometime in the future there will be a war on this subject so maybe this doc is trying to prevent something like that happening by making people more aware of the situation. So that there might be something peacefully done to address the situation.

D2. The reporter are definitely responsible for this documentary and its success. They are the ones actually getting involved and getting the shots and information that can be risky to get due to the dangers that surround them.

D3. The people behind the doc are passionate about the subject. Therefore they get really involved in all the action and do things the most people would not do to get the information that they ended up getting and putting it all into a documentary. They kind of just showed up and did their thing and no one was stopping them. Whether it was right or not to do that, it worked.
