Time Persists:
There was a little talking throughout the video, only when needed. Throughout the video, you can hear the girls jumping rope, playing an instrument, and leaves crunching. They were both with dialogue and without it. The dialogue wasn’t the first thing you heard but it comes in later with the two kids playing hide and seeks. They are going back and forth with dialogue. Then it slowly goes into a different tone of talking when the older people come in. The pace is normal like anyone else would talk. They didn’t use b-roll while the characters are talking, because they didn’t talk that much, so it was more focused on them when they talked.
They added some effects to actions that without them wouldn’t be that loud, like when the boy pulled the sword out of its holder to make it sound more realistic. In the beginning, they started the video with the sound of moving and crunching leaves. Then they bring in a musical instrument, and kids singing a song. They all take turns on which one is more prominent. The one part that I think helped the plot was when the older people came in and all the sounds cut, signaling that the tone was changing and something was about to happen. The cut brings in a more serious tone. The sudden shift brings the viewer in, and holds them, wondering what is happening next.
The music is played by one of the kids, he’s playing the xylophone to the tune of a popular kids song. The music is the center of the sound at the beginning with a few leaves moving and then is mixed in with the girls singing a jump rope song. I think the music is used to add an element of calm, but to also give you an idea of how old the people in the video are trying to play.
The sound heavily affected the drama, it starts out all nice and has a happy tone, but when the older people come in, it all shifts to a more serious tone. Which is represented by the cut in all the background sound. The happy tune of a nursery rhyme brings a sense of comfort to the scene bringing the viewer back to the times when they would play those games. Then, when the older people come to the happy tune stops, moving the mood of the scene to more serious and thought-provoking. The happy tune of a nursery rhyme brings a sense of comfort to the scene bringing the viewer back to the times when they would play those games. Then, when the older people come to the happy tune stops, moving the mood of the scene to more serious and thought-provoking. The song of a nursery rhyme sets the theme for the video, giving us clues that this video will be talking about childhood, followed by the children playing hide and seek and jump rope. Then when all of that is stripped away they get angry showing how they aren’t ready to grow up.
Joe:
There is no dialogue in this film besides the nurse laughing. There are several sound effects that we hear throughout the film, including the bottle spilling and dropping and the sound of him scrubbing his shoes. There isn’t a lot of background noise in this setting, but they focused on the sound that would make the video discomforting for the viewer and the main character. The sounds that are there are made louder to fill up the room with sound in a room that doesn’t have a lot of sounds. The sound in the film gives the tone of the main character being in discomfort because of all the loud awkward sounds around him. The main character looks more comfortable when the room is quieter.
There is a folk song that plays at the beginning of the film to introduce it and at the end to close the film. When the music is on, it’s the focus of the sound with nothing else behind them or in front of the music. When the music is on, it’s the focus of the sound with nothing else behind them or in front of the music. The music I think is mostly used to open up the film and to close it, the music comes with text on the screen. The music is just a filler for the viewer so it’s not silent when the text comes up.
It really brings home the meaning of the story, with there being no dialogue it gives the viewer a sense of discomfort but also to show how the people in that hospital doesn’t have a say in what is going on around him. The sound in this film is meant to be louder than usual, and it also brings out sounds that you normally don’t hear by themselves. Those sounds are also discomforting to the viewer to share the discomfort that the main character is going through. I believe that this film is meant to show how discomforting it is to not have control over your own life and the things that you see and hear. So by there only being loud background sound brings the viewer into that discomfort that he is feeling.
