My role throughout this project was the editor. I completed my tasks when the filming was done and all our footage was finalized. When we finished filming all the specifics scenes and clips, I shortened the videos or rearranged them to better tell the story. Some obstacles we faced were group communication and agreement. A lot of times I felt one person’s idea was more overpowering then another. I also felt that communication with editing was not strong. Something that could have made my role easier was having ideas from my other group members or allowing us all to share our ideas on a certain scene.
My team found lots of success under constructive criticism. We all made our own edits and showed each other. After, we talked about what we thought worked and what didn’t. I think that the editing went much smoother than filming. A big issue we had was communication. We had a group-chat through slack but it wasn’t checked as often as it needed to be. To create a video more efficiently, I think a good form of communication is crucial. This allows the group members to organize a time to work together, collaborate or share their ideas.
Almost all of our shots were in first person perspective until our character “sees himself”. Although there wasn’t a variety of shots at first we felt as if it would be too confusing for the viewer to follow. When the shots did switch from the first person, we used lots of over the shoulder and close-ups. The dialogue is clear because the areas we filmed were very quiet. I don’t think that music was necessary because the end of the film had lots of dialogue and the small transition sounds such as footsteps or a backpack opening had meaning and helped tell the story.
While editing, I took the pacing of our story into consideration. I made most of the clips shorter to keep the viewers’ attention. Some clips were just for transition such as walking, sitting, or placing something down. These were all short but help to continue to tell the story. There was no specific timing of the shots, just how the lengths helped them flow together. I am satisfied with the group objectives. I feel that all the clips tied together and told the story. The final video told the story very smoothly in a short amount of time. I think our clips all transitioned well and the sound, shots and acting all plated a big role in the execution.
