The most challenging part of this project was trying to direct my actors, who also happen to be my friends, to say (and remember) their lines at certain times and places. I tried to explain to them where to stand when saying their dialogue, even putting down makers on the floor so they could meet their marks. This was by far the most challenging part because this was a dialogue heavy scene. The most enjoyable part of the process was filming and writing the script. Writing the script came the easiest to me because I was able to just sit down and bust it out. As for the filming, this was a steady shot so I didn’t have to touch the camera when rolling, but I tried to frame it to be as symmetrical as possible. I am most proud of trying something new. I have never done a one take like this before, although I have thought about it in the past. I wanted to get creative and give the audience some subtext to analyze when watching the film. After completing this project, I learned that it is important to pay close attention to details and make sure I am being understood by my actors when trying to explain the vision in my head.
In my project, there was only one shot. I tried my best to keep the middle of the frame in focus, while having a bigger aperture to compensate for keeping the native ISO. The composition of the shot was in the middle of the room, dividing the room into two sides and keeping the door centered. This was a dialogue heavy project, so I needed to make sure I had good audio. I placed the microphone in the middle of the room so the actors could be centered around it. The dialogue is what gives the characters a story so this was the most important part of the project. The pacing of the story is slower. We are introduced to the characters with conflict. This conflict slowly starts to fade until another conflict starts. Although this project is just over a minute, it was mostly out of my control because I lost my actors shortly after a good take. I am satisfied with the idea of this project, although I feel like I could have done a better job directing my actors. I learned that patience is key when it comes to trying to explain a vision.
