60 Second video

Proposal by Claudio van Duijn

I will present a few ideas for the 60 second movie, project 4. I would like to use my drone for some of the video footage, I have yet to fully utilize this tool and this is a good chance to experiment with it. I would also like the video to be a series of images, I don’t want actors or a plot, more an ethereal type style where the watcher has to make there own meaning. I would like the audio and visuals to tell a story, but a story that is different to every audience member.

Arturo and I discussed the possibility of using projection mapping, experimenting with this technology could be very rewarding, and because of the short length, I might be able to pull it off in the time give. I will keep this in mind and possibly let it contribute to the video. This might be somewhat difficult, but I would like to explore this option.

IDEA 1 : River

I live near the Stillwater in downtown Orono, a nature film based of the river could be interesting, maybe following something who decides to take a walk by the river and begins noticing all the small things, the gurgling brooks contributing into the river, various rapids and the small critters which inhabit its banks.

IDEA 2: Old Car

This idea would follow the restoration of my 1983 Mercedes, this coming weekend I am planning on fixing a couple major engine parts in hope of getting it back on the road. The video could follow the repair using timelapse shots. Then the final shots could be of the car starting and driving. I could use the drone to take shots of the car from above, near where I live theirs an old mine, the shot I am imagining is a drone follow shot from a couple hundred feet up as I drive up the mine to the peak, where the drone would circle the car and the film would end. This project might be somewhat risky in the case I am not able to repair everything in the time allotted. Another reason I am leaning against this option is the general nature of it, although its interesting to me, the video might not be the most stimulating thing and doing camera work while covered in diesel and engine oil is not the most fun thing.

IDEA 3: Nature from above

This idea would focus on perspective. The initial shot would be of a landscape from above using the drone, the drone would descend in a strait line towards either the forest or beach. As the shot became close to the ground it would switch to a handheld camera shot and continue to go downward. Then the shot would change to the elements on the ground, the small rocks or barnacles, the moss or small forest stream. The rest of the video would then focus on using macro lenses to capture small life within these bioms. Crabs or salamanders, bugs and whatever might be within those landscapes. This would provide a crazy perspective from way above the land to the smallest living things within it. Arturo and I talked about possible projection mapping with this idea, giving the bugs or critters an extra ethereal “something” to make the whole video more intriguing. This video could be shot in multiple locations, for the sound I might try to capture nature sounds and amplify them atop a base layer of surreal music.
