His presence in a crypt-like structure is clearly the riches that lay so precariously before him. The camera is below Ford and is tilted slight, looking up at him, in order to show that he is an authority figure and will be a central part to this forthcoming film. Furthermore, his companion’s reveal is focused on his (the companion’s) facial expressions and reactions to Indy, furthering the idea that Indy is the main character.

The wide shot of the entire crypt gives the viewer a sense for the close quarters that the characters find themselves in. Which is only advanced farther by the introduction of the traps. In concordance with that, the shots of Ford from below and then from afar during his jump scene helps portray the imminent and mortal danger that the character is in. Which helps set the tone for the rest of the movie.

Ford’s character of Indiana Jones is also characterized well in the first few minutes of the movie. His relieved expression when grabbing ahold of the vine, only for it to start to give way only a moment later, sets not only the quick pace of the scene, but again, helps set the tone for the remainder of the film.

Inja by comparison, has a decidedly slower start. The camera starts off with wide shots showing off the setting as a rural region. The boy, Thembile, is seen at a young age playing with, as evidenced by the new collar, a new puppy that has come to live with him. The flag raising at the very beginning and after the time jump also serve to set the scene for the viewer much more directly than done so in Indiana Jones. Furthermore, the camera focuses much more on the actions of Thembile such as his closeup shots featuring him cutting the rope off the flagpole, weaving the rope, and whistling to gain the puppy’s attention.

Inja also features a power dynamic between two male characters. However, Thembile is portrayed as wanting to emulate his “father-figure” as evidenced by the medium shot of the pair breathing in the fresh air and looking outward onto the landscape. The subsequent dog-kicking scene also gives great characterization for the rest of the film. Thembile is painted as torn between wanting(having) to please his master and wanting to adhere to his own moral standards. Johannes on the other hand is shown to be a cruel man than places blame unto others. The lack of music in that scene also subtly lets the viewer know that this scene will be a defining scene. And as such, it defines the tone for the rest of the short film, somber.

Towards the end of the short film, the are many quick cuts to help demonstrate the danger and chaos that occurs when a man must choose between an innocent animal and a tyrant man. The choice our protagonist makes is left ambiguous and therefore lets the viewer picture themselves in Thembile’s perspective and wonder as to what choice they’d make. It furthers the story without saying directly what happened.

Although very different, both Inja and Indiana Jones demonstrate the power of cinematography on the emotions of the viewer and do well at creating an enthralling narrative that makes the viewer want more from the tiny snippet given.

Indiana Jones/Inja Comparison Indiana Jones starts off the the main character in the center…

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false

16
14
post-1313","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-a1","tag-fri-1pm"],"featured_image_urls_v2":
https://jolineblais.net/nmd106/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Open-Road.jpg",1024,683,false
https://jolineblais.net/nmd106/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Open-Road-150x150.jpg",150,150,true
https://jolineblais.net/nmd106/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Open-Road-300x200.jpg",300,200,true
https://jolineblais.net/nmd106/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Open-Road-768x512.jpg",768,512,true
https://jolineblais.net/nmd106/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Open-Road-1024x683.jpg",900,600,true
https://jolineblais.net/nmd106/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Open-Road-110x110.jpg",110,110,true],"1536x1536":["https://jolineblais.net/nmd106/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Open-Road.jpg",1024,683,false],"2048x2048":["https://jolineblais.net/nmd106/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Open-Road.jpg",1024,683,false
https://jolineblais.net/nmd106/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Open-Road.jpg",1024,683,false
https://jolineblais.net/nmd106/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Open-Road-550x367.jpg",550,367,true
https://jolineblais.net/nmd106/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Open-Road-300x200.jpg",300,200,true]},"post_excerpt_stackable_v2":"
Indiana Jones/Inja Comparison Indiana Jones starts off the the main character in the center of the screen illuminated by gold light.
