The entire sequence is accompanied by xylophone music and drums that rise and fall in intensity. There is a wide shot of people in suits and the xylophone music ends and the viewer is introduced to the source of the xylophone music when you see a person playing the xylophone stop playing and look up at people in suits. The people in suits are ominous and tell the other people playing in the woods that it is time. The people in the woods gather together and put on some childs costumes, they then charge the people in suits.

Dialogue:

The dialogue is short but too the point. The characters in the film don’t say much most of the message is presented through the facial expressions and the mood of the music in the piece. The most significant part of the dialogue is when the people in suits show up and declare that it is time. The rest of the characters do not agree and violently oppose the suited peoples opinion. The dialogue between the suited people and the other people when they discuss the time has close up cuts between the guy who seems to be the leader of the people in suits and the guy who seems to be the leader of the woods people.

Effects:

Sound effects are used to increase the drama in the scenes. When one of the characters searches for another hiding behind a tree. A drum roll sound effect is used to intensify the mood.

A character in the group of woods people gently plays the xylophone. This sound effect is present throughout the majority of the film and creates a somewhat ominous, and mysterious mood. Another sound effect is used when one of the characters draws a fake sword from a sheath and a metallic sound effect is used to make it seem like a real sword.

Music:

The music in this film mainly consists of music generated by the character who plays the xylophone and some drum accompaniment, meant to intensify the mood. The xylophone music is important because it is played gently on a child’s instrument and stops and starts randomly. The film itself is about childhood and how it cannot last, eventually adulthood will come in suits and maturity and declare that the time has come. Until that moment childhood seems like it will last forever, like the xylophone music it drifts gently along with little purpose and direction.

4 Literary and theatrical elements:

The xylophone playing is no doubt the most important sonic element present in the film. The film is a statement about childhood and how it gently drifts along with little direction and purpose until it is confronted with maturity and adulthood, witch comes in suits and stern expressions. Like this statement about childhood, the xylophone music accompanies the film softly with little direction and purpose occasionally fading in and out. The xylophone music quickly stops when the people in suits appear and tell the people playing that it is time. Drums are also used during the game of hide and seek that the people play to intensify the act of finding someone in the game.

NEXT FILM

Begins with a close shot of the back of a character’s head this is accompanied by the sound of something being rubbed and some harmonica and acoustic guitar music. Shots fade in and out of black and the characters name is introduced on a black screen with white letters “Joe”. The scenes are all shot in black and white and you see that the rubbing noise is the character polishing his shoes. In a medium shot we see the character look out the window and in one take we see him turn around and leave the room walking out into the hallway. The scene cuts to a character being wheeled on a stretcher and The main character sits in a chair and begins watching television. As he watches the TV more characters enter the room and begins watching the TV. The shot cuts to someone holding keyes and we hear it very loud. Next a man who is also watching the show begins to drink something. The audio is very loud and the man spills his drink onto the floor and onto the main characters shoe that he had just cleaned. The main character is clearly upset and he stands up and the shot fades to black as we hear footsteps walking away. The next scene shows the man washing his shoe in the same room that the film began in . This scene cuts as the man stands up and walks out. The camera follows the man as he walks through the hallways and up to a door. The camera then cuts to a first person perspective of the character who is looking into the door and we see the man who spilled the drink looking back at him. The scene then cuts to black and fades into a scene identical to the beginning. The sound of rubbing and harmonica music is accompanied by a shot of the man cleaning his shoes. This time the mans shoes are white and we can assume that he took the shoes from the man who spilled the drink on him. The man then gets up and returns to the Television room. There is no verbal dialogue in the film

1 Dialogue:

There is no verbal dialogue in the film. The dialogue is created through the visual tension in the facial expressions of the men in the film. This form of dialogue allows the viewer to understand how the main character feels but not what he is thinking. During the scene where the man spills the drink we see a lot of cuts between the main characters face and the face of the man who spilled the drink

2. Effects:

Sound is the prime mode of communication in the film. The building that the film takes place in is very quiet and therefore any small sound is amplified. The sound of the man cleaning his shoes, the sound of footsteps, the sound of the man drinking and the sound of the staffs keyes are all very present and important sounds in the film. Each sound is followed by a close shot of the main character and his facial expression reinforces a mood of created by the sound effect. Choosing to begin and end the film with the man shining his shoes is very important to the message in this film. Cleaning shoes is very mundane and I think the significance of this scene makes a statement about where the main character is, he is in a place where he has time to focus so much on something as mundane as shining shoes.

3 Music:

There is only music in the beginning and end of the film. The music is mainly harmonica with some acoustic guitar. I think the director chose this music because harmonicas are often associated with jail or being locked away and I think that this is intended to contribute to the mystery of where this man is.

3 Literary and theatrical elements:

Choosing to follow each of the loud sound effects like, the man drinking and the keys jingling with a close shot of the man’s face is a clear theatrical choice to allow the main character to contribute some emotion to each sound. Also choosing to amplify each sound is important because it makes a statement about the location of where the film is shot. The viewer is intended to imply that because the film takes place in a building where mundane sounds are as intense and present as they are in this film, then the building must be a very quiet and boring place. It could be a prison, hospital or mental hospital.

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false

18

post-2480","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-a3"],"featured_image_urls_v2":
https://jolineblais.net/nmd106/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Screen-Shot-2019-03-25-at-11.52.16-AM.png",1024,577,false
https://jolineblais.net/nmd106/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Screen-Shot-2019-03-25-at-11.52.16-AM-150x150.png",150,150,true
https://jolineblais.net/nmd106/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Screen-Shot-2019-03-25-at-11.52.16-AM-300x169.png",300,169,true
https://jolineblais.net/nmd106/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Screen-Shot-2019-03-25-at-11.52.16-AM-768x433.png",768,433,true
https://jolineblais.net/nmd106/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Screen-Shot-2019-03-25-at-11.52.16-AM-1024x577.png",900,507,true
https://jolineblais.net/nmd106/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Screen-Shot-2019-03-25-at-11.52.16-AM-110x110.png",110,110,true],"1536x1536":["https://jolineblais.net/nmd106/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Screen-Shot-2019-03-25-at-11.52.16-AM.png",1024,577,false],"2048x2048":["https://jolineblais.net/nmd106/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Screen-Shot-2019-03-25-at-11.52.16-AM.png",1024,577,false
https://jolineblais.net/nmd106/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Screen-Shot-2019-03-25-at-11.52.16-AM.png",1024,577,false
https://jolineblais.net/nmd106/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Screen-Shot-2019-03-25-at-11.52.16-AM-550x367.png",550,367,true
https://jolineblais.net/nmd106/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Screen-Shot-2019-03-25-at-11.52.16-AM-300x169.png",300,169,true]},"post_excerpt_stackable_v2":"
This film begins with close shots of people in the woods separated by black screens with white credits.
