Parking at the University of Maine is often a very heated topic. You can often hear students talking about how they couldn\u2019t find a parking space in their zone that was close to their class, so they\u2019re the farthest they could possibly be.

The way that the UMaine parking system works is you have black, blue, and red zones. The red parking permits are for students who live on campus with a car. Blue parking permits are for faculty. Black parking permits are for commuters. You have to park in your designated parking permit area, otherwise you risk getting a ticket, or even towed.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Students who live on campus don\u2019t have a lot of parking near their residence halls, so they have to park further away. Sometimes they will go out and run a quick errand, come back, and there will be no spots available. On big event days, such as accepted student days, or open houses, it\u2019s hard for current students and possible prospective students to get a decent parking space. Frequently often students have to park in a zone that isn\u2019t what is on their permit because they would rather be on time to class than get a parking ticket.

However, the whole issue is that students are trying to find convenient parking so they don\u2019t have to walk too far to their class. If there isn\u2019t a parking space for their color permit near their class, or even on the correct side of campus, they resort to parking in a zone they aren\u2019t supposed to. You hear of some commuters who leave 30 minutes earlier than they need to because they\u2019re afraid they won\u2019t find a convenient parking space.

So that begs the question: what can we do differently to make this easier? Expand parking lots? Limit the number of permits purchased? Or just have free parking for everyone, just have one permit that proves you purchased it. Or go ahead and have designated spots for professors and faculty, that are for them and them only? They could even have their names on them. Or even just having on campus residents park the furthest away from campus, so that the commuters can find spots easily. There are too many options, and a lot of time. But the student body would like to have a solution sooner rather than later.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
