Writing 2 – JohnB
- Controversial figures are interesting to me, such as the Fyre documentaries about Billy McFarland. People with history or interesting stories would be cool to interview as well, such as veterans or travelers.
- I have always been interested in exploring places around my home in Massachusetts. Me and my friends would go to abandoned places and explore them. In a place with so much history, MA has a lot of potential to explore.
- I enjoy skiing, so maybe visiting a mountain to film something there could be an interesting event. I also like to play fighting games competitively, and i’ve seen interesting documentaries on the scene before.
- I cant really think of a behavior that i’ve noticed among groups, but asking college students that question could probably uncover some interesting thoughts among them.
- Asking the local businesses and stores could lead to some interesting stories. A lot of bars have relocated and opened new locations, so asking the owners of them could uncover some economic news.
- A lot of students have brought up the pothole problem, which is a big event that a lot of students care about. A lot of people I know have damaged their cars on the road near the Collins center and the cca lot. Im sure the school is aware of this issue, but they need to communicate with the students what they plan on doing. We also could examine the extreme cold that students face and the danger that it can pose.
- In my math class, we examined fallacies and how they are used in arguments. Perhaps exploring that around discussions in classes could be interesting.
- We didn’t get any footage that would be useful for this project during our first project. We could return to the football field and possibly go over the infrastructure of the area.
I chose three topics that I think were feasible for us. The pothole subject, the weather topic, and asking students about various behaviors. I think all of these are acceptable and relevant to our campus and academics. We really wouldn’t need to access any locations, and anyone surveyed could be grabbed off the street or on the mall. We could ask staff and faculty as well, and organize meetings with them. I think the pothole topic is a little to narrow, but the weather topic could allow for more discussion, and even involve the pothole problem as a small part of it. The cold and dangerous weather is an issue probably every student is aware of and has an opinion on, but not a issue to broad that we cant get a general consensus. This topic isnt too broad for us to cover, and is a topic everyone would have a view on.
I am writing this letter to ask for an interview with a member of your staff. Some classmates and I are making a student piece in which we are focusing on the weather-related dangers and hazards on campus. As you know, we rarely ever have school cancelled and many students walk a far distance to class in sub-zero temperatures with ice and snow. Me and four other students are involved with this and we all have our own roles. We have a couple questions prepared and would love to hear what you think. We want to help give some of the students a voice who wouldn’t normally have a chance to ask these questions. We plan on interviewing fellow students and other members of faculty that have opinions on this as well. We plan on starting filming next week, gathering footage and finding b-roll online or somewhere in public access. We also need to organize meetings with the people we plan on interviewing.
