Writing 2 – MatthewM

Ideas list from our group google doc:

*Possible filming strategies*

  • Recreating a nature documentary where college students are like the animals.  Like a parody style
    • Could work well with the dining halls or any aspect of food and basic life needs like shelter, entertainment, ect.
    • Possibly an Australian narration
  • Pineapple on pizza?
  • Ohop or Pats or Dominos?
  • Pc, Xbox or Playstation
  • android or iphone
  • Do you start on the top or bottom when brushing your teeth?
  • People’s opinions on “scary” technologies.  Ex. AI, facial recognition, ect.
  • Dining halls on campus.
    • Which one is the best?
    • Is the food good or bad?
    • Importance of the dining halls?
    • Special events they hold

Bangor music scene?? Its small and kind of baffling but it does exist

Controversial albums– what makes a piece outsider art/avant garde as opposed to just bad? Ie farrah abraham ‘my teenage dream ended,’ corey feldman ‘angelic 2 the core,’ captain beefheart ‘trout mask replica.’ what separates these from other similar pieces that arent as controversial? Ie kim kardashian ‘jam (turn it up).’ arguments to be made for both sides, can u evaluate these as art? Is context important? Etc. could also tie in experimental and no wave releases– glenn branca ‘the ascension’ comes to mind, is this even music? Its just drone sounds but does the artistic intent behind it make it music? Similar– bull of heaven. Musique concrete too (we have a class on this at umaine, i think its a part of new media but could be wrong, could talk to the prof as well as music/music theory professors). Noise (merzbow and the gerogerigegege come to mind) too. Further– could tie into film. ‘The room’ dir. Tommy wiseau, ‘still flowin the movie’ dir. R.A.E.D. etc. ignore conventions of filmmaking.

Similar vein– vaporwave. Is it low effort music or is there more to be analyzed there? Example: in floral shoppe by macintosh plus– is it just diana ross slowed down with the reverb turned up to 10 or is it a commentary on consumerism and nostalgia???????

Genre– is sound or context more important? Ie can something accurately be classed as no wave if it wasn’t produced in new york in the late 70s-early 80s? Even if it sounds like other releases in the genre?

Umaine Dungeons and Dragons Club
Meetings at 4:30 to 5:30. Could record a part of a session

Part B:

So far all of the topics listed above are within our reach to do. However, the ideas surrounding music might be slightly out of reach due to how specific and niche the topics are. But, I do not know much about music or the music scene on campus so it might be completely feasible. The main issue I see with the music topics as well as the Dungeons and Dragons Club topic are the interview topics. Getting people to interview for the music topics might be difficult because of how specific the topics are, but I think it could definitely still be possible. And while there are people involved with the Dungeons and Dragons Club to interview, I do not see much for another point of view on the subject. Me included, I feel that there really isn’t much of an opinion on the topic other than people know it is a game and people play it. All of the other topics that we have come up with so far are very feasible because they relate to lots of people, yet can get specific enough to get good people to interview.

Part C:

Although we have not decided on the topic/idea we will pursue yet, my favorite as of right now is the parody of an observational nature documentary where the subjects are college students.

Possible missions statement: The goal of this project is to create a funny/easy to watch documentary about the true college life of students. This documentary is aimed towards high school/college students due to them being able to relate. However, it would also act as a true insight to what college life is like to someone in an older generation. Possible people who can be interviewed who truly know college student life would be a guidance counselor, professor, an RA, or a dining hall employee. The reason why it wouldn’t work to interview a student is because they are the subject of this “nature” documentary, and there are no interviews with lions or elephants “real” ones. Obviously the people involved in the making of this would be our group with roles up to what people want. The roles we do need are a camera person, audio person, editor, director, actor, and loose script writer. The documentary will be made on campus anywhere there is a majority of student traffic. The best spots would be the walkways around campus, the library, lecture halls, dorms, and dining halls. The stages of this project would be to come up with a script/directions as to what shots we will get, where we will get them, and what the topics of discussion would be. The narration over the film would most likely be recorded before the filming as well, then the B role can be put behind it. And lastly there is editing where all of the B role, interviews, live exploration scenes, and voice over comes together.
