A. Brainstorming

  • Teams, clubs or bands could be groups of people worth interviewing about their activities.
    • This idea is definitely feasible, I could talk to a few of my friends who are clubs and sports. I could get B-roll of a game if it is a sport and interview players about how the game went
  • The gym could be an interesting place to find someone who might be worth talking to
Dining halls could also be a good place.
    • These places might be good outlets for interesting characters but may be hard to make into a narrative. Maybe if I did find a character in either of those places I could interview them about how they feel about the place I met them, either dining hall or gym.
  • I skii and I know a lot of people who skii so maybe talking to people who skii could generate some interesting topics
    • This could be an interesting topic to interview people about and there is definitely very many skiers on this campus. Maybe I could go to maine bound and interview people in the skii or outing club. B roll may be difficult for this Idea.
  • Behaviors that students do like skateboarding or exercising could be interesting people to talk to because of their lifestyle.
    • This Idea could work and it would be very feasible to get B-roll of people doing these activities. Finding a way to make this into a narrative however may be difficult.
  • Ohops, slice bar, a new local business could be an interesting place to start a topic
    • This topic could work very well. I think I could generate a clear narrative about the success of the new business and interview both customers and the employees. The difficult part will be doing this in such a way that it doesn’t come across as an advertisement for the business. Instead I would want to find a narrative about the struggles and successes that the business has faced.
  • The upcoming event, “the healthy high” or theatre events on campus could also be good outlets for a documentary.
    • This event could be a great place to find interesting characters to interview. However creating an interesting narrative around the healthy might be difficult. Maybe I could talk to the people in charge and interview them about the struggles they face setting it up and how this year compares to others.
  • The Bangor farmers market could be a good source of both characters and interesting stories that could be worth making a documentary out of.
    • This could definitely be a great outlet for finding interesting characters. I could possibly interview as many farmers as possible and then compile something about the farmers market as a hole or I could find characters that I like and go into more depth. I could get some great B-roll of the market itself as well as customers buying products. It’s possible that I could even visit a farm and get B-roll there and make the film more about one particular farm.

C. Development

Me and my group decided on the topic “what is new media”. Our goal is to interview students enrolled in the new media program as well as faculty. Through this we will use our documentary to educate our viewers on what umaine thinks new media is as well as allow our views to gain there own perspectives on what new media is. Our interviews will supply content describing what goes on in the program from both a student and professors perspective. We will supplement this information with B-roll depicting typical activities and projects that new media students work on.

There are five members in our group and we have yet to decide on roles for each of us. I hope to either work as a cameraman or an editor because I did mostly directing and acting in our last project. My group plans to contact professors as well as students in the new media program asking for interviews. We will all contact people that we think would be best at describing new media. We plan on conducting the interview all in the same place to have consistency throughout the film. For this reason we will have to choose a location that works and stick with it. If we have multiple days of filming interviews we will have to conduct them all in the same place. This past week we have focused of brainstorming, next week is going to be time to film and we will save all of the editing for the last week so that if we notice something that we need to change we will have time to do it.
