Writing 2 – Tyler D

A. Brainstorming

  1. The person in charge of road repair and construction would be an interesting perspective to have for our video.
  2. The place can be any road on campus as most if not all are littered with tire-bending potholes.
  3. Driving on campus is a nightmare compared to the rest of town due to the heightened level of road damage.
  4. Many people swerve to avoid potholes when driving and risk a ticket, or have to get their cars repaired due to not swerving to avoid them.
  5. Local tow truck and car repair services have increased business along with construction crews having a repeat customer of UMO.
  6. A petition to repair the potholes on campus has circulated its way around the student body.
  7. This is not an issue that I have investigated in any professional or academic manor but am excited to.
  8. Potholes may not be a glamourous subject, but they are covered fairly frequently on news stations and even in pizza commercials.

B. Feasibility

  1. This topic is most definitely appropriate as it is an issue that all drivers on the UMO campus deal with every day.
  2. The campus is public property so access will not be a problem. The most limiting factor will be daylight.
  3. Since our focus is on UMaine potholes, it is a small, daily, inconvenience that can have lasting effects on drivers and pedestrians. It can keep the viewer’s interest as it directly affects them and therefore is of concern to them.
  4. I believe oru topic is well-positioned in its scope. Our topic can be broadened to include the entire UM system, the state of Maine, or even national pothole statistics. However, as these become less and less relevant due to their increasing size, so does viewer interest is the topic. If we we to narrow our focus, we could revolve it primarily around car damage due to potholes. However, in order to provide a full and relevant context, we should instead include number of potholes, locations, and potential solutions.

C. Development – Mission Statement

  1. Our topic of Potholes will require us to interview a variety of people. FIrst and foremost, we will need interviews of people who drive on campus regularly, then we will need interviews of an employee of the school as to get their perspective on the topic. Finally, a third interview that would focus on a commercial perspective such as a UPS driver would be helpful as well. Potholes are a daily nuisance that can affects almost everybody on campus. They lead to erratic driving, increased repair costs, and the slowing down of traffic. All of which are hurdles not only to me, but to others as well. So for those reasons, I would like to focus on potholes for our project. Therefore we will be doing the majority of our filming on campus on roads such as Flagstaff and Munson, some of the worst offenders. Footage will be gathered by most members of our group, but mainly Tim and Charles. Kaitlyn is on top of research. Olivia will be doing the interviews and I will be in charge of doing the editing for the team. We will need clips in by Thursday the 7th of March in order to get a rough cut done by Friday the 8th of March. Therefore interviews will need to be scheduled at the latest on Monday the 4th of March in order to work with the schedules of the interviewees. Finally the final cut should be completed at the latest by the night of Thursday, March 14th.
