For this project, I will be filming myself and my guitars. How they work, how they sound, and most importantly, my relationship with them. How it effects my life, what music means to me, how it all started, and where I want to go with it.
I want to start my project off talking about when I was a little kid. My father was in a band with his brothers/my uncles. So, I was around music my whole life especially growing up. I was 4 or 5 years old and I had a little toy drum kit that I would mess around with. It was the start of something really serious for me. When I was 7 my dad built a guitar for me, but I never really played it. My dad even bought me an acoustic guitar for my 14th birthday. The drums were my life for probably 10 years. I took lessons, played in school plays, school band, jazz band, marching band, you name it. I was even in a band in 5th grade. If it involved percussion I was there. But, sadly as I got into high-school, being more social caused me to kind of get away from making music. I did band freshman year and percussion ensemble but fell off of it because I wanted to spend more time with my friends. I only dabbled with the piano every once in a while. Once I got to college I took a music class and kind of found that urge to create again. I started to really get into digital music production using FL Studio. I would hook up a midi and just spend hours playing. That Christmas I got a piano and started to play it religiously. However, the school became really difficult as a Computer Science major forcing me to spend more time on work. Sophomore year I changed majors to New Media. Subconsciously, I always felt like something was missing in my life. I wanted to be the creative nerd I have been since I was a little kid. New Media for me opened me up to ways for me to express myself I’ve never thought of. I was driving back home for spring break thinking to myself “why did I stop playing”. That Sunday I decided I would spend spring break learning how to play the guitar. I grabbed my acoustic and played 2+ hours a day at my girlfriend’s house. I was immediately in love with it. I have no idea why I never picked it up earlier. Since that day I played every day. There’s something magical about improvising when it comes to playing. Creating things that sound good to you is an art form and a direct expression of yourself. I fell in love with exactly that; playing till my fingers bled.
