The MUUL

Empathize:

MUUL’s target demographic are users who struggle with nicotine addiction and want a healthy way to wean off their addiction, while still being able to inhale. Unlike MUUL, MUUL’s design goal is to specifically help the user end their addiction, and it needs to appeal to the market of quitting smokers. The MUUL isn’t targeted toward children and teenagers. The MUUL should be used as a way to end a nicotine addiction, which has been in an epidemic with the recent outbreak of vape usage. In order to be considerate of how this product is created, it is important to understand what materials are being used, and how the product is being transported through the supply and retail chain. The MUUL should have a minimal impact on the environment.

  • Target audience: People who are already addicted to nicotine, we want to avoid starting it.
  • Production: We want to be considerate of how this product is being created, ensuring that we are creating something which has a very low environmental impact, and if possible has environmental benefits.
  • Waste: We also want to make sure there is some sort of incentive to return this to be wasted properly, perhaps the next purchase is cheaper, or the device is made of biodegradable components.

Define:

  • The user has a need for nicotine in a none addicting form to be weened off.
  • The need for a way to ween off nicotine follows Maslow’s human rights pyramid for safety needs.
  • This device also follows the center for humane tech because in idea this device gets returned after use to be recycled with a money-back incentive. This is to prevent filling our landfills with the hopes to be self-sustaining.
  • Allows the user to create an environment in which they are in charge of the plan, so quitting is entirely up to them, allowing the addiction to be controlled.

Ideate:

  • The MUUL was first created to help people addicted to cigarettes quit.
    • It failed since the nicotine levels were just as high if not higher than what you would get from the average cigarette.
  • This product needs to be sleek like the MUUL and small enough to fit in the hand like a cigarette.
    • When people are quitting, you need to wean them off, so keeping the product as similar to a cigarette experience as possible will help to maintain the experience while reducing the nicotine.
  • This product should actively avoid the likelihood of new or continued addiction.
  • This product should be healthier than current options, while still giving the satisfaction of a cigarette when first used.
  • It should be tamper proof, so people can’t break into it and add new nicotine concentrate that might be stronger than what comes standard.
  • It should not be accessible to children, so should require a way of authenticating the user before they can use it.
  • This product should not be as sexy as a MUUL to avoid it becoming a fashion statement.
  • It should not be something that people feel the need to pick up as a new habit.
    • For this reason, it should really be something than you cant just keep buying and using.
  • It could be possible to get sponsored by foundations like TRUTH to give an option to those trying to end their nicotine addiction.
  • The product should have around 3 different versions with varying nicotine dosages, to accommodate to users whom have smoked longer, and more than others.

Prototype:

Sleek design– sustainable materials, similar to preexisting vapes.

3D modeled design to incorporate the idea and show how the product would look or feel like

Test:

We were unable to do a test run with our product as it was just a 3D rendering, however we did approach fellow peers and students and asked them if this product would be beneficial to them or someone they know to get them off of vaping.

Revise:

After presenting to the class the only issues we agreed that need to be fixed were having real test groups, getting certifications and trying to find a way to manufacture one of these devices to get some test studies done, while looking for data on how this would affect users and whether or not it would be effective.
