For this assignment, students have been asked to pick either the first-PEW research article or the other two articles provided and read through them to understand some of the digital harms techs can cause. As for me, I chose to read the PEW research article. The article opens with the congressional grilling of Mark Zuckerberg regarding his power in American society. The passage emphasizes the problem that people are always on technology and tries to explain that it causes a lot of mental unwellness. Digital technology has caused problems such as the well-being of people, stress levels, ability to perform work, and the risk of suicide.

In light of these concerns, the PEW Research Center is trying to find solutions to improve technological well-being. While there are people who benefit from connectedness, there are those who suffer socially or physically isolation that causes constant, intrusive connectedness that now characterizes people’s lives and has harmful cognitive and emotional consequences. The article also reveals a strong connection between phone and internet use and losses of analytical and problem-solving skills, memory formation, contextual thinking, conversational depth, empathy, and increased anxiety. There are a lot of digital addictions, distrust, and pressure that come with technology.

Despite having a lot of negative impacts on human life, technology does have some benefits. According to the article, humans need connection, and the internet is the best place for that interaction. Whether in politics, science, education, and romance, the internet connects people with important information. Human beings want and need connection, and the internet is the ultimate connection machine. Some solutions to help the issue of technology include reimagine systems, the reinvention of tech, regulation, among other solutions, to improve technology.
