I struggled for a long time with looking at a screen when I definitely should have been asleep. This was a major issue during my first stint in college at University of Maine at Farmington. I was was always struggling to attend class or take tests. It was bad. However, I am not alone in this. Many tech users suffer from sleep issues and even insomnia. The blue light emitted from phones and other devices delays your internal clock and further pushes back REM sleep. Many people are so exhausted and it changes their willingness to engage in various activities and even their general mood. I feel there could be a few decent solutions to this issue. Some are definitely more feasible than others. First having a timer and a reminder that it is sleep time could work easily. Using a WIFI blocker or cut off feature would certainly be effective but may be hard to implement because of people’s reluctance for these sorts of features. It would probably be most effective to use remainders and have each user utilize a toolbox of methods to limit their usage and encourage sleep. My image is simple. It represents a person staying awake late at night. They are sitting on their bed and have phone usage on their minds. The phone has the words “sleep?” almost taunting the user to indulge more.
