being a #Gay person, one of the more harmful sets of memes I find are rooted in the perpetuated dehumanization of gay people, often through grotesque depictions such as this example I concocted, rooted in turning everyday LGBTQIA+ individuals into these grotesque parodies of what the community represents, leaning into the depiction of gay people as loud, ugly sexual deviants not worthy of your more refined and important time or care.

the second meme opposes this idea with its depiction of kind, domestic loving, and humorous depiction of a relationship between two equals.

one twists the ideals of an undesirable community into a threat in the eyes of the masses, and one humanizes the “undesirable community and relates their experiences into the masses.

humor will always be rooted in the things people feel are true but that they aren’t allowed to say. This is why gay jokes that come from within gay communities are so valuable, and if social media deferred to rewarding jokes that came from people within the community they form their humor around, it would lead to a much more healthy discourse in general.
