I notice that I correspond with more people but at less depth. I notice that it is possible to have intimate relationships that exist only on the Net and have little or no physical component. I notice that it is even possible to engage in complex social projects, such as making music, without ever meeting your collaborators. I am unconvinced of the value of these. (Brian Eno p. 126).
I feel as if this quote is describing the impact that cellphones and social media have on our social skills and perceptions of others when using these devices to communicate with one another.
The best memory that I have that I hope future children will be able to have in the future without the accompaniment of electronics or cellphones would have to be the times in middle school when me and my friends would go out into the woods behind my backyard and build forts. It was very memorable to me because we would just go into those woods and just have a great time and using our imaginations collectively to just do whatever we wanted. It was a different sense of freedom that you only really get when you have to rely on your parents at those adolescent times.
Post iPhone Era makes moments like the one above so rare nowadays. Of course me and my middle school friends from back then are much older now and have more “adultish” things to do. However nowadays you also kids of that age often accompanied with a phone or some sort of mobile video game device to keep them occupied at all times. While I can see how it is a convenience since phones are quite addicting, I feel like every kid needs these moments since they allow you to interact with others and allows you to be comfortable enough to be yourself and not have a worry in the world.
