“The Internet has changed the way we make decisions. More and more, it is not individual humans who decide but an entangled, adaptive network of humans and machines. ” (W. Daniel Hillis  229)

This quote is very relatable to this current society we live in. As we grow, technology continues to advance and grow with us. Our society is becoming so dependent on technology because we rely on it for simple tasks that we could go without using. The quote describes how we are basing our decisions off of the advantages technology now gives us, and that we are combining as one network due to the advancements we have created. When I think about the ways that the internet has changed our society, the biggest example is when I’m babysitting. When I was younger I remember my babysitter used to always do my nails and hair, or play outside. When I’m babysitting the kids constantly ask to use my phone, a tablet, or watch TV- and as a babysitter, we always want to say yes to make the job easier for us. Technology has become a tool we use every day even if we aren’t always aware of it. Another example is what we do every day at school. Tests, homework, studying, everything is digitalized. When I was in elementary school we got to use the computers in the library for a specific amount of time. Now at my elementary school, each child gets their own tablet for the year, and it has become so normal to us, even the kids. The quote resonates with me as it reminds me of how different my upbringing has developed as technology has also developed. It’s interesting as I am able to watch younger kids grow up and be able to compare it to my own experiences. On a long snow day, as a child, I would play outside, go sledding but now I would rather stay inside, watch TV or scroll on my phone. As Daniel Hillis said, the world is now becoming an adaptive network of humans and machines. Machines are starting to replace humans in simple jobs, they’re making decisions for us and doing work for us. These tools and machines have so much power that we are just starting to understand, and as we just understand them they develop a bit more. Technology is constantly growing with us. Information is tackling personal development and progress as a community as it develops different groups and allows us to work faster, find research faster. Technology allows me to show personal development in school, it shows progress where I can find research and write and explain my findings. This is not individualized, children in elementary schools are able to use technology to show development, and this cycle leads to the progress of a community as a whole.

“A bearer of knowledge is no longer armed with secret weapons. We have always been auto-didacts, and knowing that we can touch what we do not yet know and make it our own, makes working with knowledge immensely playful and pleasurable. Sometimes, a surprise is only a click away.”

THE INTERNET HAS NOT CHANGED THE WAY THAT I THINK

Access to information and ideas has always been important for both personal development and progress of a community or nation.
