Although we created it, we did not exactly design it. It evolved. Our relationship to it is similar to our relationship to our biological ecosystem. We are codependent and not entirely in control…We are now all connected, humans and machines. Welcome to the dawn of the Entanglement.” (W. Daniel Hillis 251)
The first thought that comes to mind when reading this is “we have created a monster”. I don’t generally think the internet is a monster but I do think it is incredibly powerful. “we are codependent and not entirely in control” while this statement is very true I feel as though I can spin it and say each person make up a piece of the internet as I would say 90% of our lives has something to do with the internet whether it be work or scrolling through facebook. As a whole, I think we make up the internet and that is scary because we have seen what that can do.
I remember going camping as a kid with my family and having a blast I had no worries or care for what was happening outside of our campsite. I spent my days fishing building “homes” for animals and just running around with my brothers.
Recently I went to my friends camp and I found it amazing how much they used their phones out there. they had even bought unlimited data because there was no wifi. I guess I felt like this wasn’t camping at all more of just a normal night in a tent.
Pt.2
“The Internet is currently the great leveler: it allows everyone to have access to exactly the same information. Will this ultimately destroy diversity of thought?”-Frank Tipler ‘WILL THE GREAT LEVELER DESTROY DIVERSITY OF THOUGHT?’
We have seen this topic come up a lot especially in politics of people saying ‘oh you are just supporting that person because it is trendy’ and that is the beauty and what makes the internet so scary that what you write can be seen by millions and change and form opinions but we have to look at it in a positive matter or else the internet will feel like a dangerous place.
“The Internet dispenses information the way a ketchup bottle dispenses ketchup. At first, there was too little; now there is too much.” -Judith Rich Harris ‘THE JOY OF JUST-ENOUGHNESS’
In all honesty, this feels really ignorant to say. How can we have too much information, yes some make argue how can we know what the truth is and I say back if everything you ever heard was right where would have a chance to grow. I deeply feel there is never too much information in any context if someone is looking for it.
Pt.2 (she changed this part in class so here I am redoing it :))
IS THE INTERNET CHANGING THE WAY WE THINK?
by Ana Gerschenfeld
“The global web is compared to an ecosystem, a collective brain, a universal memory, a global conscience, a total map of geography and history.”
In summary, this article accuses the internet of reaping us of our individualities and free thought. to an extent, I believe this, for example, the internets popular “cancel culture” where a few individuals can decide something is not okay and try to totally destroy a person character which is typically filled with the trigger word “cancel” instead of someone forming their own opinions on the situation just following the wave.
HAS THE INTERNET CHANGED YOUR THINKING?
by Frank Schirrmacher
“Experts no longer talk about data, but about what computers predict with the data”
The complexity of computers is changing every day and as those days go by more things in our life we do online. The more we do online the more the computer learns from it. This is the fine line of the internet on one side it can be overly relied on damaging our thoughts but the other side it can be doing good and allowing us to access more information quicker. I believe this is a generational thing, I think the earlier you were exposed the more dependent you are on your devices. we see this in older people who may only have a TV which none the less is technology but then say the kids in middle school now only know what it is like to have a phone, tablet, and computer at easy access.
