Technology:
Smart phone and TV.
Over use of these products may cause people to become addicted to this type of technology which isn’t necessarily healthy. It can lead to mental health issues as we have read about in the articles.
Smartphone:
Emotional- The apps we use can lead to people feeling lonely and causing them all sorts of emotional problems.
Attention- Everywhere you look you always see people looking down at theirs, in some cases they prefer that over human to human interaction. Nowadays it’s easier to get someones attention through smartphones than anything else.
Sense-making- The younger generation of people are born into this kind of technology so they get used to it so quickly as someone who has seen the advancement of technology might not understand it in the same way younger people do.
Decision-making- Phones are used for decision making quite frequently. Like when we choose or choose not to talk to someone.
Social Reasoning- All people want is a large following on social media so they have a feeling that they are important or popular.
Group Dynamics- Phones are causing us to miss out of the greatness of face to face interactions.
TVs:
Emotion- I’ve seen people revolve their life around a TV show. Which qualifies as taking over their life emotionally.
Attention- People get so caught up in the entertainment industry they become addicted to TV shows and lose track of what’s important.
Sensemaking- Usually we focus our eyes on the tv only
Decisionmaking- We don’t really make that much decision when we are watching tv except when we are deciding what to watch
Social Reasoning- Watching TV can be a social activity if a bunch of people gather to watch a game or something.
Group Dynamics- Watching tv at a party is a little different than sitting in front of it all day alone because it is a fun time watching the game with a bunch of friends compared to channel surfing for half an hour.
It wouldn’t be very easy to just stop someone from looking at their phone. But if I were to come up with an idea that could possibly work it would only allow the user to use their phone for a certain amount of time each day. However their texting and calls would not be limited for emergency/work reasons they might need to text or call someone for. But the user would not have access to social media apps and things like that. Same goes for the TV. They can only use the TV for a certain amount of time each day so they are forced to get up and do something productive.
