Topic Being Discussed: AI

Ai has sort of been a controversial yet beneficial topic that has been discussed throughout the years. The argument has been going back and forth because some people believe that it can help our society and make some of the harder tasks in life a tad bit easier while on the other hand, there are people thinking that it will be something that ultimately is the end of humanity as we know it. I can agree with the suspicion to a degree because what if there is a possibility that a computer can become smarter than a human and gain an actual consciousness. I understand the fear that comes from some people, but there has been plenty of things that Ai has helped us within our technological endeavors

I have two of many ways that Ai is beneficial to our daily lives. The first being that we won’t need to do any more tedious tasks because Ai will be able to achieve that for us and according to Kashyap Vyas “Financial institutions today are seen taking full advantage of this technology to make banking quicker and infinitely easier for the consumers.”(Vyas). It cools to see how technology can help businesses cater to their consumer’s needs. The second benefit is a next-generation disaster response. This allows companies to see real-time data on disasters and weather events and makes it so they know what places get affected the worst and proper prepare that are for future catastrophes.

Even though there are a lot of benefits to Ai there are some concerns that come with it. First is the fact there are completely autonomous weapons being created that are being powered by Ai.

This Picture above is the Ziyan Blowfish which is an autonomous helicopter made in china that has bombs attached to the bottom of it and according to Ai Business, this helicopter was designed to “autonomously performs more complex combat missions, including fixed-point timing detection, fixed-range reconnaissance, and targeted precision strikes” (Briggs). This is one of the reasons why Ai can bring fear into people because knowing that this technology is designed for things to kill can be a bit concerning.

The Second Concern with Ai is Social Manipulation and this is the algorithms that social media sites use on their sites. It’s kind of scary knowing that these Ai systems know every single thing about us like what videos we like to watch, the things that we search up the most, or the types of things we like on a daily basis. It feels like nothing online is private and even though we there are settings on out accounts that say we can hide the stuff that we don’t want other people to see, are they truly hidden?

When it comes to changing these types of problems for the better I can’t really think of a way to re-design it, but to be more cautious about how it is being developed. Like for example with the military weapons, I would want to test it over and over until it works the way it is supposed to so there will not be any accidents when it is brought on the field of duty because there are the possibilities that the ai could mess up and end up targeting friendly soldiers or possibly civilians. Moving on to the social media algorithms, I believe the only way to be able to limit this it makes it so it tracks us on fewer things that it already is. Does it really need to know what groups we are in or what posts we prefer to comment on?
