Concerningly, surveillance has become a “norm” to us, as we just disregard the fact that we are constantly are being listened to or that our data is being and used as a marketing tool. In class, we talked about the different benefits and consequences of surveillance, where we found there were more consequences than not. My group had an ongoing discussion that although in some apps it’s in the terms and agreements, it is still an invasion of privacy. One outside issue I looked into was when facebook was sent to court because of their extremely unreasonable use of surveillance.

Two concerns I have is that any app can take any data off your phone, which is alarming and allows no privacy. Another alarming concern to me is that although this is explained in the terms and conditions, we are never exactly sure about what data is being taken, we aren’t told when or what it is, it’s completely involuntary for most people.

I believe to improve these issues companies and databases need to make the terms and conditions much more available and easy to read or understand. Many companies make them complex and difficult to really understand what you’re agreeing too, making it hard to understand what they are really taking. I think some aspects of this, such as apps taking information on things we like or search is a bit inevitable, but we can be more cautious about it. Personally, I don’t think it is acceptable, I think its an invasion of privacy I think it’s hard to avoid in this day in age because everything is revolved around technology.
