Ring Doorbells were created to create a sense of security at your home even when not there. The Ring AI interface allows homeowners to watch the live feeder of their front porch and be alerted when the motion sensor is triggered and even talk to people at the door through the Ring. With all these handy features is begs the question, are you the only one surveilling through your Ring doorbell.
In The Venture Beat article researchers found with the Ring Doorbell being a partner of Amazon your data is actually being sent to them. When you sign up for the live feeds for ten dollars a month you are also agreeing to allow amazon free access to your data which includes the live stream of your home. A monster of a company like Amazon having your personal information can make you feel uneasy but according to the USA Today article recently Amazon secretly partnered with police across the country.
on one hand, we see our security being taken seriously and working with the police but on the other hand, a trusted company just gave your privacy away without opening stating so. Amazon Ring partnerships with police departments threaten civil liberties, privacy, and civil rights, and exist without oversight or accountability.
This tech has me very mixed on if this is safe and supportive of human health and happiness because yes it could help someone in need but all your privacy is gone. If I were to redesign this tech I would make it so only the user it is purchased to has access to these feeds and there is a very clear option to share these feeds with local police but not amazon. I do not believe amazon needs feeds to debug the program rather than reporting bugs so cutting them out would be a huge part of my redesign. I believe the intentions were pure with the Ring Doorbell it just became too commercial and by making a truly private security system we will not only have our civil rights back but our peace of mind.

My doorbell now records video using AI, but am I the only one watching?
