The city of Bangor, Maine has an issue with modern technology. While the city itself doesn’t mean a lot to most people, its where I am from. In Bangor there are streams that feed into the river, which goes straight into the ocean. Our biggest value in Maine is to treat the wild life as they deserve to be, wild. The biggest selling point of the state of Maine, for most people, is the closeness to nature, and being able to adventure around. A technology our city has to keep is the public transportation and regular transportation. We have to keep these technologies because it is nearly impossible to get rid of them as we can’t justify getting rid of them to benefit society in a positive way. Another technology we need to keep is our library. While a library is an odd pick, libraries contain a ton of physical information that is greatly accessible to the public. Especially in Bangor, our library is actually tied down to the history of the city, and the state. The library keeps the community connected through events, provides shelter for those that are less fortunate while open, and is full of knowledge, leaving its footprint on the community massive, with very little downside. A library maybe considered an ‘non-digital’ technology I would still classify it as digital. They have access to more books on a seemingly infinite network, and they also offer public amenities like computers for people to use, other than just for finding books. If I had to ban a single technology, I would get rid of digital/analog wall clocks. I feel like as a society we are too pressured to use our time wisely, and we contain ourselves to think with in deadlines. I understand that keeping track of time is a very important function for society, but its very limiting. If we look at a normal life schedule, most people are just wasting their lives away. 9 to 5 jobs Monday through Friday, leaving only time for breakfast, dinner, and sleeping in between, then leaving the weekend for house work and stocking up to do it all again next week. I also feel like the clocks also limit the ability to be creative, and can cause a lot of people to struggle with understanding why they have to learn something in a set time frame, as everyone learns differently. I feel like the Bangor community could get rid of certain technologies democratically if need should be. I know a huge problem for wild life is the road salts we use to melt the ice. For the city to take action to change to another technology is very costly, and it would need a vote, otherwise there would be extreme public out cry.
