I would say that the community that I value is the people on the floor of my dorm. The reason that I value this is because not only are my friends from last semester on the same floor, I have met so many new people either from my roommate’s friends or from small talk when studying in the lounge with other people. The things I value the most are the fun times I’ve had with this community and the thing I would not want to lose is the connections and the good times that have been spent.
One of the digital technologies that I would keep is game consoles because when there were times when everybody just didn’t know what to do, someone would propose booting up a game of super smash bros or some other party that they have and everyone would jump on board in an instant. Video games are a technology that anybody can enjoy, experience or not and I would say that the main source of entertainment in our weekend hangouts would be this source of technology. Video games are a big part of my life and I have obtained quite a few consoles over the years, so whenever we get a bunch of friends together to hang out it usually takes place in me and my roommate’s room because I have a pretty diverse collection of games to play.
I would say that the second technology that I would also keep is VR. I have two headsets to mess around with, one for my PlayStation, and another one called the oculus quest. The reason I value this is because virtual reality is a rapidly growing market and I want more people to experience the greatness of it. I could say that VR has brought our community a lot closer together because it’s fun to get together and watch people experience it for the first time and it also the reactions people give when they are immersed in a virtual space are pretty funny. I’m glad that this sort of technology exists.
Even though the two things that I want to keep and support are two pieces are technology, I would ban the use of smartphones in the community I am in. I feel like it is a huge distraction at times and I don’t see a point of it when most of the time when we are all in the same room. If this technology was excluded out of this community then I feel like the interaction between my other floormates will increase and would benefit everyone for the better. It’s fun to laugh and have a good time with everyone and not stare at a screen for an hour.
The reason I value these types of digital technologies from observing the experiences that my other floormates have had with them, but maybe some of them maybe have opinions that disagree with claims. If there was a process for our community to decide on what we can keep or ban I think a way we could do it would be to hold something like a regular floor meeting and everybody would vote yes or no on a set of questions like we do on a ballot during election time. With this in place, everybody could give their own opinion on how they feel about the types of digital technologies that are being used on the floor
