Exercise 1:
PROBLEM: A DISAPPEARING LANGUAGE
Ian Larson wanted to help preserve the Passamaquoddy language from extinction.
For this problem solution B seems to be the better option for a many to many strategy. Solution B consists of the idea of using a class to use laptops to record their grandparent’s stories and definitions of words within the stories and making these stories accessible to others. This is many to many because the students are interacting with each other as well as the grandparents, which in turn are being uploaded and shared with many others who can witness and interact with these stories. I don’t think solution A would be a good strategy to pick because it only takes words from a select number of native American experts, it is more interactive and a different and better experience to learn about this language through learned and personal experiences of others.
PROBLEM: NEGLECTED RUINS
Evan Habeeb wanted to make people aware of the beauty of abandoned buildings.
For this problem solution B seems to be the better option for a many to many strategy. solution B consists of people being able to make their own stickers placing them where they go then whoever ends up going to the same place and there are stickers on the walls that can scan them and look at other people’s pictures. This is many to many because this is more of a wide option of people being able to participate and interact with the product. whereas solution A consists of a documentary/ movie style of recording abandoned places, this is more of a one to many approaches because in this instance there would only be one person filming and editing the video, which is being broadcasted to a person who is watching the video. Overall solution A is not as interactive as solution B.
PROBLEM: MISUNDERSTANDING COMPUTER ANIMATION
Ryan Schaller and Jason Walker wanted to help people understand the many layers required to create a computer-animated film, including wireframe, textures, and light effects. As a case study, they created an animation depicting a cartoon archeologist digging for ancient artifacts.
For this problem I think solution A is more of a many to many strategies because it is using different mediums to have people interact with it, multiple people could use this technology and learn with it as well as have fun. solution B is more of a single person to use an application, it can be distributed to others and multiple people but an app is essentially only made for one person to use.
PROBLEM: A BROKEN FOUNTAIN
Danielle Gagner wanted to renovate the waterfall fountain under the skylight in the middle of the University Union, which had fallen into disrepair.
For this problem solution, A is a many to many strategies it involves the community and brings multiple opportunities for many people to benefit from it. Solution B is interactive in a different it doesn’t necessarily involve other people it is more of an interactive way of looking at the fountain.
Exercise 2:
STUDENT FILMS ARE ALWAYS SET IN DORMS
How can you help filmmakers find better locations for their videos?
Many student films are set in dorms because it is almost like a universal sign of students or being in college, it is the most recognizable and noticeable thing. To solve this problem you can invite theater and art students to help create and build sets. This can bring people together and adds diversity as well as involving the community. They can also fix this problem by taking polls and advice from college students about where they go and what activities they like doing throughout their school experience.
Both of these solutions are many to many solutions for finding a way to change the norm of student films always being set within dorms. Involving the community that involves many people giving back to the many people in which the film represents and to the people who would be watching the film. As well as the polling from the community of students, getting many opinions and ideas from them as they already know what they do during school and other places they hang out at instead of the dorms. These solutions cover for both student made films and films made about students.
