For my identity category, I chose race and how it has been supported and unsupported through media over time.
Identity Supported
The time magazine cover when Barack Obama became the fist Black President.
President Lyndon B. Johnson signs the 1964 Civil Rights Act as Martin Luther King, Jr.,and others look on.
The current sitting Supreme Court Justices which has greatly diversified in the last 50 years.
Identity Unsupported
An image of a school student in the 60s protesting the integration of African American Students. I chose this image because it really shows the lack of support for race equality during the civil rights movement.
This is one of the original Jim Crow depictions use to pain African Americans as being brutes. I chose this image because of its blatant racist motivations.
This is a sign above a bus station showing where African Americans were allowed to wait; separate from the white patrons. I chose this image because it is a classic example of segregation.
Part Two
Spotify allows me to create an online identity based around my music taste. I can create a user name and have a profile picture. Over time, as the application learns my music taste, it creates a public Discover Weekly playlist which brings together music that I might also like. This playlist refreshes every week.
