Cell Phones:
I think cell phones can fit into pretty much every ledger of harm, they have completely changed the way that we communicate between one another. They have created a deep attention deficit among society, we cannot look at our screen for about 40 seconds before we get distracted. whenever some kind of vibrate or buzzing noise goes off we go directly to our phones. They are always with us like they have become part of our bodies, many parents even download videos and apps to distract or keep their kids busy if they haven’t bought them their own phone yet. Being exposed to that kind of attention is scary at a young age being able to have access to the internet almost anywhere you go. With the addition of emojis and ‘text lingo’ relationships have changed as well we go by social media and pictures to determine certain factors of our relationships, texting is one-sided even if you are talking to someone else on the other side. You would read a text in your own discourse and may misread or misinterpret what the other person might have meant.
According to Hari’s natural anti-depressants, there can be a sense of community that phones make it easier to call multiple people to make plans or just talk to, there can also be meaningful work made on smartphones in which bring some people joy by sharing it with others or just doing it for themselves. It can also bring access to a secure future for some people who do what they are passionate about creating a following for what they are doing.
I think it is hard to improve on cellphones and smartphones but if there was a way in which we could specifically manage the amount of time that we have access to certain apps or social medias on our phones or games that we are not allowed to open/ would not work after the user has exceeded the set time limit then it would force people to be more interacted with nature and others around them as well as increase their attention span as they can not waste time on their phones.
Computer/Laptops:
I think computers can be helpful bit can also be harmful, they can also lessen our attention spans the more we go on them. There is a risk of children becoming less focused as well as being trapped into watching or playing something that is very inappropriate for them to see. Because of the blue light they give off, it can lead to less sleep which may be a result of other things such as stress.
Relating back to Hari’s natural anti-depressants computers and laptops are a great source of information for those who are looking for it and looking for it in the right places, making it easier to join in conference calls with co-workers online and can help an artist create meaningful work.
I think similar to what the phones need are times you are able to set the amount of viewing time on certain websites like Netflix or youtube, or an option where once you are finished with a certain paper or assignment the computer will let you have access to those sites in which may distract you otherwise when you are working or studying.
