Cell Phones:

Cell phones definitely fit into every ledger of harm.  Cell phones have completely changed how everybody interacts and communicates with each other. Many people prefer texting to real face-to-face interactions. They have also created an intense distraction for the population. It’s hard to do anything for a period of time without checking your notifications and sometimes that can even lead to death in the case of texting and driving.  Cell phones have such a strong hold on us that even the sound of a vibration prompts us to frantically reach for into our pocket to check. Most people can’t leave their phone at home when they go out, it has become a piece of us.  Children are sometimes even more attached to their phones than adults. Their entire life has been spent on these devices and it is the core of their social life. With cellphones inevitably comes the apps we downloaded on them. Our mental health and relationships are both drastically affected by social media, miscommunications, and loss of empathy. Democracy has recently been affected by social media as well with the influx of fake news, propaganda, and places to spew hate without consequence.

According to Hari’s list of natural anti-depressants, cellphones do actually check of a few categories. Social media can sometimes have a sense of community. Certain apps can help you with your health and physical activities. If you find certain groups online, they could help you to talk about and heal from past trauma.

In order to improve on cell phones and the apps downloaded on them, we need to emphasize that people need to take a break from their devices. If we could get people to put their phones down and live in the moment, everybody would enjoy their life more. Perhaps a timer or some other type of restrictions/reminders could tell you that you’ve used your phone enough for the day.

Computers:

Computers face most of the same issues that cellphones do, but in general you can do more with them. You can be far more productive and creative on computers. You can also be more organized and offline if you want to be. Generally, people are not with their computers at all times and don’t feel the need to check them all the time. Also, people tend to do more work than waste time on their computers, although we all do get distracted sometimes.

Computers check of a decent amount off of Hari’s list of natural anti-depressants. Computers are a great at getting work done fast and easy. Some people do all of their work for their job on a computer. You can find community on the internet. Through doing work on a computer, you could secure a future. And like I said in the cell phone section certain websites and apps can assist you with emotional healing and physical activities/health.

Computers could be improved on by restricting them to be for work only. Maybe we could have people less distracted if we only let apps and the internet on people’s phones and made the computers exclusively for work and creating. Computers could also benefit from timers, reminders, and restrictions.
