I would like to focus on Artificial Intelligence and how we can create a safe enviornment surrounding AI. After discussing in our groups in class one question I would like to investigate is when is it necessary to use AI and when is it necessary to have people take over?
There are many different forms of AI from using siri on your Apple iPhone to drones that are used in the military. One of the TED talks that we watched in class mentioned how there was a military bot which would target and shoor specific people, but it malfunctioned and started to shoot into a crowd of people (https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=1&v=BrNs0M77Pd4&feature=emb_title). After listening to this I began to think when exactly is it necessary to have AI and when does it just seem unecessary when it may be safer or easier for it to be controlled by man. This example I beleive is not necessary to have AI for this purpose because something like this could happen or it could be targeting the wrong people. AI doesnt have any emotional or moral compus, even though humans do and depending on the person it differs but I believe that it would be better for a person to make a right decision or at least a better decision than a machine.
Which brings me to the topic of AI in cars, is it necessary or would it be safer to have the driver in control? there has been a recent influx of self driving cars or prototypes of self driving cars being tested in cities. While it is a great technology to have I believe that it may not be competely necessary, as self driving cars or functons within cars that allow you to take your hands off the wheel still pose some problems when it comes to uncertain situatuions which the safest option would be to keep a person at the wheel. Many of these cars are not equpit to deal with the climate change so when the weather changes it can be dangerous to use this technology (https://builtin.com/artificial-intelligence/artificial-intelligence-automotive-industry). This could be dangerous because the car could easily spin out of control and harm others as well as the driver and its passengers. Another concern with AI within cars is again the safety aspect of others many of these cars are only created and coded with basics of how to drive or detect other cars in passing lanes but they are not prepared for unexpeceted events that can often occu while driving. It is hard for self driving cars to detect when pedestrians are around or are even crossing, there has already been one incifent involving a Uber self driving car not being able to detect a woman crossing the street, hitting and killing her (https://www.wired.com/story/ubers-self-driving-car-didnt-know-pedestrians-could-jaywalk/). This is something that should be taken into consideration when creating this kind of technology wether it is an adult, child, or even animal random events like this can occur and being able to have a physical person behind the wheel may be better to determine and react in such situations.
In some ways self driving cars may help and support happiness but I believe overall that a car driving itself may just end up being more harmful than helpful. The perks of having a self driving car means less stress of ddriving for the passenger and they are able to just relax, they could probably even take a nap while stuck in traffic if they wanted to. I think that this kind of technology needs more work before becoming a main stream selling point. To fix the tech or at least re-design it there should be a modification on its detection systems. There are cars now in which have detection sensors around the outside of the car which can detect if another car is getting too close to you or not, this kind of tech is very helpful. If there were to be some way to incorperate this into a self driving car but on a bigger scale to detect people or other objects that may come in the path of the vehicle. This could most likely be fixed by adding a sensore that is stronger to the front and back of the car that can detect a farther distance away from the car. However this also comes with problems when driving or parking the car it may mistake other cars as obstacles in its path and could delay the way the car works and moves. Another addition that could help this problem is adding an emergency break within the car itself within reaching distance of all the passangers. By doing this the passangers would be able to withness of there is anyone or any object that may be in the road or making its way past the car, the passangers would be able to stop the car before something bad may happen. With this I think it would be beneficial to only let people who have their drivers license to be able to use these cars for the reason of being able to be alert within situatuations such as these. These people already have experience in driving so they would be able to react fast enough and recognize when something bad may happen unlike the AI within the car.
