A community that I value is the University of Maine campus that we all attend. Even though we are a moderately large campus and school, the community here is very tight and supportive. I value this community because it is a place I live at for most of my year. It is a great setting for learning, socializing, having fun, and working. I value the freedom I have here and all the resources located on campus and in the surrounding areas.

If I were to keep two digital technologies in this community, I would keep the security cameras and the emergency text alerts the we receive from the campus. Security cameras are very necessary for any public areas, but they are especially needed on college campuses. They make people feel safe,  monitor the area for anything bad going on, and make it easier for authorities to keep control and track of everything going on. The footprint left behind from security cameras is a moderately large one. Cameras have a big upfront cost and can take away from the natural look on campus sometimes. Overall I feel like the positive affects of security cameras, greatly outweigh the negatives.  The emergency text alerts are also very necessary on campus. They keep everybody very safe and informed of whats going on on campus. I think its great that with the press of one button the University can alert everybody that classes will be canceled or that the power will be shortly restored. Another plus to these alerts is that there is basically no footprint left behind. The benefits of these alerts completely outweigh any negatives that there may be.

If I had to ban a digital technology on campus, it would probably have to be smart phones. Now, I wouldn’t want to outright ban smartphones completely, but rather only in classrooms. I believe that this would benefit the community because we would all be far less distracted. If we had to leave our smartphones somewhere before class, everybody would be more involved and engaged in the community. We would also be able to learn more efficiently and be more social. Even if you never used your smartphone in class, it is still very distracting to see others use theirs.

I think it really depends on the type and size of a community to figure out how they want to promote and ban tech. Overall though, I feel like democratic voting is usually a pretty effective way to coming out a fair decisions.
