Exercise 1

Problem: A Disappearing Language

Solution B would be the many-to-many solution to the problem of the disappearing language. This is many-to-many because it puts the preservation of the Passamaquoddy language back into the hands of the Passamaquoddy people. This is a project that creates a community in order to solve the problem. Solution A would not be considered a many-to-many solution as it does not involve the community in the process of creating the database, rather just a small team of experts.

Problem: Neglected Ruins

Solution B would be the many-to-many solution to the neglected ruins problem because this process encourages people to share their experiences in visiting abandoned places. Solution A would be one-to-many because a singular team would be generating a static DVD. Solution B would not only put creating the website in the hands of many but also encourage people to participate in visiting locations with the motive of sticking the stickers.

Problem: Misunderstanding Computer Animation

Solution A would be more of a new media solution than solution B when it comes to the computer animation problem. Solution A is much more dynamic and allows the user to search physically within the animation to discover its secrets. Solution B would be much more static since it is a less interactive experience.

Problem: A Broken Fountain

Solution A would be the new media solution when it comes to the broken fountain issue. This is because a community garden needs to be maintained and created by many. Solution B is a static installation that could potentially be created by only one person, and would not have a connection that affects many people. A community garden is created by many and benefits many more people than a screen playing images.

Exercise 2

Visual Art is Too Static

How can you create a mural that responds to individual viewers?

I propose one possible solution to this problem is to create a multi-layered mural that can overlap one another and be digitally displayed on a massive screen. Then, I would use a camera or sensor to detect the presence of objects/people that are in front of the mural. The more people present the more the mural will “paint” itself, adding more details and parts of the mural with more people present. With enough people, the whole mural would appear and layers would contain movement animations to make the mural appear to have some life in it. The complete mural could be some form of visual about people coming together with a message of community. The fact that the mural can’t be complete without people present will add to this message of the need for community.
