STRATEGY 1: Crowd-Source The Job

PROJECT: Lay’s – Do Us A Flavor

Do Us A Flavor is a campaign by Lays and PepsiCo that looks to it’s consumers to create new chip flavors and to eventually vote on the best flavors. This campaign was a huge success, especially on social media, and has been repeated many times as well as launched globally. Lays was trying to strengthen their consumer base and attract a younger audience, and it definitely worked. This exemplifies the strategy because it is a huge company allowing the people to pick their next flavor.

STRATEGY 2: AGGREGATE, AUTOMATE, AND VISUALIZE DATA

PROJECT: The Largest Vocabulary In Hip Hop

This is a project that visualizes the quantitative lyricism of rappers. The creator aggregated all of the data from the lyric website Genius, automated a process to count the number of unique words in the first 35,000 lyrics released, and visualized it all into clean, visually appealing, and interactive graphs. It doesn’t have much of an impact, but I personally find this very interesting and love to see it expanded on even more.

STRATEGY 3: DIY

PROJECT: Thingiverse

Thingiverse is an online community that shares 3D models, mostly for 3D printing purposes. The community is very DIY centered and shares models that are anything from action figures to parts to fix whatever you might’ve broken. In a way, this website is both DIY and Crowd-Sourcing. Rather than going out and buying a new product you can check on here to see if there is a free 3D model for what you want. From there you can print it yourself for very cheap.
